Abstract

Metallurgical coke is made from raw petroleum coke particles, or from a blend of particles of raw petroleum coke and bituminous coal, optionally with an inert carbonaceous material (e.g. anthracite, calcined petroleum coke or coke breeze), in a two-stage heating process. In the first stage, the charge in the form of a thin stream is rapidly heated to a temperature in the range 300 DEG to 525 DEG C. and while still in that range the particles are pressed at 500 to 4000 p.s.i.g. to produce a green body which, while still hot, is heated rapidly in the second stage to 560 DEG to 1000 DEG C. to reduce the volatile content. If petroleum coke alone is used, the volatile matter content (VMC) should be at least 10% b.w., and the coke must form a hard "button" while being heated, in accordance with A.S.T.M. D271-48; if used with coal the VCM must be at least 8% b.w., the coal having a VCM of at least 15% b.w. Proportions of the blend are (parts per hundred): 20 to 95 petroleum coke, 80 to 5 bituminous coal, and 0 to 25 inert carbonaceous material, and particle sizes should be less than 1/8 inch. Heating times are of the order of 40 seconds to 5 minutes for the first stage and 1 to 8 hours for the second, and the first stage may comprise a duct through which the particles are carried by combustion gases from a furnace, and/or a chamber containing a vibrating tray or moving grate or belt also heated by the gases. Heating rates are given for the second stage. Specific examples are described.
