Abstract

A charge for a blast furnace is produced by separating particulate iron containing material, of which not more than 5% by weight of the particles are greater than 20 mm. in particle size, into at least one coarse fraction and a single fine fraction whose upper size limit is between 0.5 and 2 mm., this fine fraction being made into pellets which are subsequently kilned, the kilned pellets being suitable for feeding to a blast furnace. Separation may be effected in a hot-air classifier. If two fractions only are produced the coarse fraction may be sintered to render it suitable for feeding to a blast furnace, alternatively the coarse fraction may be separated in accordance with size to produce two fractions, the finer of these two fractions being sintered to render it suitable for feeding to a blast furnace. Where two coarse fractions are produced the coarsest fraction may be fed directly to a blast furnace or it may be kilned in a manner similar to that used for pellets of iron-containing material, the kilned material being suitable for feeding to a blast furnace. The coarsest fraction may be mixed with some green pellets containing iron and the mixture kilned in a rotary oven. The largest size for the finer of the two coarse fractions may be between 4 and 6 mm. The iron containing material is preferably mixed with hot dust containing iron before or during the separation into the various fractions. In the case of plastic ores, e.g. Minette ores, with or without iron-rich ores, e.g. haematitic and magnetitic ores, the fine fraction of upper size 0.5-2 mm. may be pelletized in drums and/or on trays utilizing water droplets to nucleate the pellets and a fine water spray to grow the pellets such that their moisture content is 14-16% by weight. With haematitic or magnetitic ores the fine fraction may be milled after drying,if necessary, before being made into pellets and the fine fraction may then be heated in a rotary furnace at 500 DEG C. for 10-20 minutes and then at 1000 DEG C. and at 1300 DEG C.
