A stay assembly for folding tables and the like comprises first and second stay arms 5 and 7, which are connected by a pin 9 and slot 10 connection permitting both pivotal and limited linear movement of the arms, an L-shaped hinge arm 1 for securing to a wall and to which the free end of the stay arm 5 is hinged at or near one end 6, and a second hinge arm 2 (to which is secured a folding table top 4) which has the stay arm 7 hinged to end 8, and is hinged at 3 to the horizontal portion 1a of the first hinge arm 1. The stay assembly also comprises a locking arm 14 pivotally connected at one end to the stay arm 5 and carrying a stud 15 at its other end for engaging a plurality of notches 16 on one side of the second stay arm 7. In the closed position, the horizontal portion 1a of the first hinge arm 1 enables the table top to hang vertically with the hinge arm 2 and the stay arms 5 and 7 positioned between the hinge arm I and the table top 4 (Fig. 1, broken line). In the open position, a stud 11 on the stay arm 5 enters an L-shaped slot and at the position 12b forms an interlock and is held in that position by a safety catch in the form of a hook 13( Fig. 1). The table top is locked in various partly open positions when the stud 15 of the locking arm 14 engages various notches 16 in the stay arm 7 (Fig. 2). In a modification, (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown), an intermediate arm 17 is pivotally connected at 18 to the stay arm 7 and to the other stay arm 5 by pin and slot connection 9 and 10. The notches 16 are replaced by holes 16 and the L-shaped slot by a slot 12 consisting of a smaller and a larger portion 12b and 12a respectively, the larger portion 12a being capable of taking both the pin and head of the stud 11.
