' IRONING BOARD Filed Oct. '7, 1944 INVENTOR. NA x Y 77*?0 N/ c Arz'r Patented Aug. 20, 1946 UNITE SATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to ironing boards of collapsible construction and particularly to small boards adapted for use in pressing or ironing light work, such as sleeves, baby garments, etc.
It is the general object of my invention to provide an improved and simplified construction in such an ironing board, which construction is economical to manufacture and is reliable and satisfactory in use.
An important feature of my invention relates to the provision of an improved locking device by which the board will be automatically locked in raised or working position when moved thereto.
My invention also relates to arrangements and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
A preferred form of the invention is shown in the drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a plan view of my improved ironing board;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof; and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of a locking plate.
Referring to the drawing, my improved ironing board comprises a base I to which a board II is secured by parallel links l2 and I l. These links are preferably in the form of open rectangular wire frames, secured to the base I0 and to the board H by staples or other fastening devices I5.
A brace 20 is pivoted at 2| to the under side of the board I l and is provided with a downturned or olTset locking end portion 22. A spring 23 engages the brace 20 and forces the end 22 of the brace firmly downward against a locking plate 25 (Fig. 3). The plate 25 has a guiding flange 26 on one edge thereof and is provided with an opening 21 to receive the end 22 of the brace.
.As the board II is swung upward from the dotted to the full line position in Fig. 2, the end 22 of the brace 20 slides along the plate 25 and is directed by the flange 26 to the opening 21 into which it snaps as the board is fully raised. On its near side, as viewed in Fig. 2, the brace 20 engages an upright portion of the right-hand 2 link l4 and is thus held against the flange 26 as its end 22 approaches the opening 21.
The shifting of the board H from folded to raised and locked position thus requires only a simple swinging upward movement of the board, and no attention whatever need be given to the operation of the brace 20 as it moves automatically to locking position.
When the board is to be folded, the end 22 of the brace 20 may be lifted manually out of the opening 2?, after which the board I! may be swung downward and to the left in Fig. 2 to the folded dotted line position.
Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed, otherwise than as set forth in the claims, but what I claim is:
1. A folding ironing-board comprising a base, a board, parallel links connecting said board in swinging relation to said base, a brace rod pivoted at the under side of said board and having a down-turned locking end, and a guide-plate on said base having an angularly disposed guiding flange for said brace and having an opening to receive the locking end of said brace when said board is in raised and operative position, said guiding flange being positioned to be engaged by said locking end and to automatically direct said locking end transversely of said guideplate into said opening as the board is raised to operative position.
2. A folding ironing-board comprising a base, a board, parallel links connecting said board in swinging relation to said base, a brace rod pivoted at the under side of said board and having a down-turned locking end, and a guide-plate on said base having an angularly disposed guiding flange for the lower end of said brace rod and having an opening to receive the locking end of said brace rod, said guiding flange and a side portion of one of said parallel links engaging said brace rod on opposite sides thereof and coacting by such lateral engagement therewith to automatically direct said locking end into said opening as the board is raised to operative position.
