Description

1932- J. w. BEIGER 1,873,263
FOLDING CARD TABLE Filed Dec. 3. 1930 INVENTOR "(10/20 M 521' er BY ATTORNEYS Patented Aug. 23, 1932 warren STATES JOHN W. BEIGER, 0F LUDINGTON, IMICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO THE .CARROM COMPANY,
T NT we:
0F LUDINGTON, MICHIGAN FOLDING CARD TABLE The objects of the invention are:
First, to provide a simple, strong structure for bracing the table legs in upright position.
Second, to provide an improved pivoted brace means for such a table leg.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of'construction and operation Will appear from the description to follow.
A preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which: 7
Fig. 1 is an inverted plan view of a card table embodying the features of my invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail inverted plan view of one corner of the table, showing the legs in folded position and the relation of the adjoining leg.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail side elevation view of one corner of the table showing the pivoted brace, a portion'of the side rail being broken away to show the slide slot in the corner iron.
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view on line 4t of Fig. 2, showing the spring clip for holding a leg in folded position.
The parts will be identified by their numerals of reference which are the same in all the views.
1 is the table top. 2 is the frame made up of side rails suitably joined together by a usual corner fastening. bar inserted in each corner to strengthenthe same and afi'ord the support for the leg and the brace means.
One arm 31 of this corner iron has its outer end turned up into an ear 4. Pivoted ears 5, 5 are struck up from the corner iron towards the corner. 6 is the table leg which is pivoted to the ears 5 by the pivot 7. 8 is a main brace secured by pivot 9 to the bracket 4 and by through pivot pin 10 to the table leg.
11 is the pivotedbrace for the table leg, being pivoted to the opposite end of the through pin 10. The upper end of this brace is provided with fixed cross pin 12.
Arm 32 of the corner iron 3 is provided with slot 13 which is struck with the arm H as a radius when the table leg is upright, being slightly enlarged at its upper end.
3 is a corner iron The brace 11 is drawn inwardly from the table by'spring 18 wrapped'around the end, i
of pin 10 and secured at "14; to'the t'ableleg and wrappedaroundthe pivoted brace at 15,
see Fig. 3. v V The foot of each leg is provided with a rounded glide 16 which serves as adome of silence, when the table is upright and which engages spring'clip 17 secured to the table top when the table is folded. i
Brace 8 is deflected and bent into close proximity to the side of the table leg6 so that the adjoining table legcan-be folded into position without interference. j
The pivot pins 9,17 and the pin12 are in alignment when the .tableleg is folded, and pivot in line untilthe leg is swung to the up: right position, when, due'to the action of the s rin' 13 brace 11 swi'n s out carr in in 12, to the end of the slot with a snap, locking the table leg in upright position whereit remains until the brace 11 is moved back by the hand of the operator when the table leg can be folded. v Y
The springaction swinging the brace outwardly so that the pin engages the end of the slot prevents any accidental displacement of the said brace, or at least tends to retain the brace in position and lock the leg upright until the pin 12 is moved into alignment with the pivot pins 9 and 7 The pivoted locking brace is available with other structures than that here illustrated,
but cooperates especially well with the opposcific form illustrated on account of its com- V pactness and simplicity and also broadly as pointed out in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a folding card table, the combination of a top, a frame composed of side rails, a corner iron within the said side rails, one arm thereof having an upturned pivot lug at its inner end and a pair of pivot ears struck up towards the corner, a table leg pivoted at its'upper end to the said ears, a brace secured to the said table leg and pivoted to the end lug, a pivoted lock brace pivoted to the side of the table leg and carrying an outwardly projecting pin at its upper end,.'a slide slot formed in the other arm ofsaid corner iron described by the radius of the said lock h brace when the table leg is in upright position, and a spring on thesaid brace arm to swing the same outwardly to cause the pin to engage, the; end of a slot. J
2. In: a fold'ng'card t corner iron within the said side rails, one arm thereof having an upturned pivot lug at its inner end and apair of pivot ears struck up towards the corner, a table leg pivoted at its upper endito the said ears, a brace secured tothesaid table leg and pivoted to the end lug, a pivoted lock brace pivoted to the side I of the. table leg and carrying an outwardly projecting pin at its upper endQ-and a slide slot. formed in the other arm of said corner iron described by thev radius of the said lock brace-when the tableleg is in upright position. 7
In witnesswhereof I have hereunto set my hand 7 JOHN W. BEIGER.
