Abstract

110,953. Speed, J. A. Nov. 14, 1916. Spray carburettors. -An automatic valve admitting air to the mixing-chamber of a carburettor is combined with means for variably restricting the flow of liquid fuel, and with a dash-pot for retarding the opening of the air valve while permitting free closing thereof. An elevator s carrying the fuel-delivery jets t<1> is moved vertically by the suction in the induction pipe, and controls air inlet ports v<1>, v<11> and a fluid-supply valve o. In consequence of the varying elevation of the jets t<1>, the air and fuel supplies are not proportional, and the desired changes in the mixture under different conditions are obtained. A dash-pot consisting of a piston n with a one-way plate valve n<11> controls the movement of the elevator s, retarding the opening of the air valve v<11>. Fuel from the float chamber a passes down a passage k and fills the cylinder m, m<1> containing the piston n. Inclined vanes w carried by the elevator above the jets t<1> impart a rotary movement to the mixture in the carburetting-chamber. An inclined vent tube vv cauaes the part s to rotate slightly, throttling the air inlet ports v, v<1> at high speeds. A passage y places the space below the air valve in communication with the atmosphere and relieves back-firing pressure. A fuel supply passage d to the float chamber may be adjusted bv rotating a part b around an inclined bolt c. Air inlet openings v are rotated to any desired position and clamped by a collar a<1>. In a modification, the rate of fuel supply for different positions of the air valve depends upon the cross-section of the fuel valve o, which has a shape other than conical,
