Abstract

1,108,405. Labelling machines. AVERY PRODUCTS CORPORATION. 18 July, 1966 [17 Dec., 1965], No. 32116/66. Heading B8F. A single air draft device 20 (Fig. 1) is connected by valves 14 to apply successively to a foraminous member 12 suction to retain a label 57 and then air pressure to apply the label to an article such as a magazine 54. The valves may consist of plates 28, 29 pivoted to close ports (24) . . . (27) (Fig. 4, not shown). The valves are moved by a linkage (31), (32), (34), against the bias of springs (39), when a constantly running motor (43) (Fig. 6, not shown) is connected by a slipping clutch (46) to turn a lever (38) into engagement with a stop (50). In an alternative construction plates (90). (91) (Fig. 7, not shown) are turned in unison through a linkage (100) (Fig. 8, not shown) from a solenoid (101), to connect either the inlet or outlet of a pump (87) to the foraminous member. An adjustable bleed 76 (Fig. 1) or (110) (Fig. 7, not shown) limits the degree of vacuum. The labels are stripped from a carrier sheet 58 (Fig. 1) when this is drawn round a knife edge 61 adjacent the foraminous member 12. The operations are controlled through preset delays from a photo-cell device 65 detecting magazines on an endless conveyer 53.
