Abstract

1,094,917. Endless conveyers. SIEMENS A.G. June 23, 1966 [June 24, 1965 (3)], No. 28108/66. Heading B8A. Articles A, B, C . . . of letter mail are drawn from a stack 1 by an endless conveyer belt 2 of air permeable material when a valve 11 is operated to apply suction from a line 15 to a chamber I. By operating valves 11, 14 and 19 sequentially under the control of a shift register (not shown) and scanning devices 13, 22, the letters may be progressively forwarded by the action of the belt and chambers I, II and III. Vacuum selectively applied at nozzles 20 and 21 may prevent multiple transfer. The nozzles 20 (21) may be replaced by ports (26), (27) (Fig. 4, not shown). When a letter is too small to activate a scanning device (28), only ports 26 are energized. Initial energization of the ports (26), (27) causes a letter to tilt into the dot-dash position of Fig. 4. Vacuum is then momentarily released to allow the letter to drop into correct position for a reading operation.
