Abstract

[Also in Divisions B7 and F2] An air buoyancy conveyer comprises a number of normally closed valves 17, Fig. 1, arranged over the floor 4 and arranged to produce pre-oriented jets of air under the control of a proximity detection system when an object 6 to be conveyed is in the region of the valves. In the example, the valves 17 are actuated by the air pressure beneath the object 6 produced by air from previously opened valves. Each valve comprises differential pistons 11, 13 slidable in bores 14, 15 and having a central passage 18, 19, whereby pressure air is released from a plenum chamber 2 beneath the floor when the air pressure beneath the object 26 causes the piston 11 to be depressed. The valves may have oriented passages 31, Fig. 3 (not shown), for directing the jet of air forward or sideways to guide or propel the object 6. Projections 34 are also formed on some of the valves for mechanical engagement by the object 6 at the loading point so that the system is self-starting. In a modification the piston-actuated valves may be substituted by flexible diaphragms 37, Fig. 6 (not shown), which are pressed into recesses 14 in the floor 4. Groups of valve plungers 56 may be formed integrally with or mounted in a flexible sheet 53 of plastic or metal.
