Abstract

1,010,543. Coating- machines. COX & SHARLAND Ltd. May 29, 1964 [June 14, 1963], No. 23828/63. Heading B2B. Apparatus for applying glue or like adhesive to a surface comprises a deformable glue reservoir, means for applying pressure to the reservoir to force glue therefrom to a glueapplying device and trigger means which cause or permit the discharge of glue from said device via a solenoid operated valve which opens in the direction of flow from the reservoir to the device. As shown, the reservoir comprises a deformable bag of plastics material housed inside a container 9 to which air under pressure may be admitted in order to force the glue along a line 7 to an applying device 6. The device 6 6 is adapted to apply stripes 4, 5 of glue to successive sheets 1, 2 of paper in a book-binding machine and includes an electromagnetically-operated valve. Fig. 2 (not shown), the opening and closing of which is controlled by photo-transistor devices 14, 15 sensitive respectively to the passage thereunder on the feedtable 3 of the machine of the trailing and leading edges of the sheets 1, 2 of paper. The length of the stripes 4, 5 can be altered by varying the positions of the photo devices 14, 15 on the bar 48. The valve member in the glue applying device 6 is arranged (Fig. 2, not shown) to close in the reverse direction to the flow of glue and thereby gives a sharp cut-off of the flow. The tip of the applying nozzle is formed obliquely to the bore thereof. In modifications the photo-transistor devices may be replaced by feeler members which contact the article to be coated.
