FREDERICK S. ANAIBLE, 0F BROOKLINE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR T0 NATIONAL BINDING MACHINE COMPANY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MAINE.
Original application filed Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 24L, 1918..
February 1, 1908, Serial No. 413,798. (Patent No. 1,168,777.) Divided and this application filed January 6, 1916. Serial No. 70,554.
which the following description, in connec tion with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This application is a division of my copending application Serial No, 413,798, filed February 1, 1908, now Patent No. 1,168,777.
This invention relates to devices or apparatus for supplying strips of paper or other suitable material of any desired length to be applied to packages, bottles, bundles or the like as a wrapping means or as a label or for any other desired purpose, the illustrated embodiments of the invention. showing apparatus provided with means for holding a strip supply previously gnmmed on one side, such strip being adapted to be withdrawn in selected lengths and further provided with means for moistening the gummed side of the strip as the latter is withdrawn. It is apparent that an ungummed strip of paper or the like might be employed, and the moistening device be utilized for applying adhesive to the Side of the withdrawn strip.
My invention will be best understood by reference to the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying illustrations of two specific embodiments thereof, the scope of the invention being more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings,-
. Figure 1 is a side elevation partially in section of aform of strip serving device embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of a portion of such form of device;
Fig. 3is a side elevation partially in section of a further form of strip serving device embodying my invention; 7
Fig. 4: is a plan view ofsuch form of device.
In the forms of the invention herein disvarious means are provided to pre- 7 discharged upon the strip when the latter is drawn for use.
In Figs. 1 and 2, I have represented a form of the invention, wherein a shield or cover is interposed between the reservoir and the strip. Herein the reservoir 19 is provided with one or more, and herein a pair, 0 elevated open-ended portions 20 extending above the mouth of the moistener which is herein represented as slotted, as indicated at 21. Suitably mounted above the mouth of the reservoir is a preferably sliding shield or cover 22 likewise slotted as indicated at 23. The said cover is mounted in suitable side guides 24, 24, and is normally maintained in a retracted position by springs 25, 25. The strip 26 issuing from the strip sup port passes between the elevated portions 20 of the reservoir beneath a guide 27 and then contacts with the rear portion of the cover or a bar or other member 28 mounted thereon. When the strip is drawn upon for use, the cover 22 is thereby moved forward so that the slots therein register with those formed in the mouth of the reservoir, so that the water or other liquid is discharged preferably under slight pressure due to the elevated portion or portions of the reservoir upon the gummed surface of the strip. After severance of the strip, the cover is retracted by the springs 25 and the flow of water from the reservoir is cut oif.
In Figs. 3 and 4;, I have represented a form of the invention wherein water or other suitablemoistening fluid is supplied under pressure as by means of a pipe 29 connected with any suitable source of supply, the said pipe having a suitable discharge orifice 30 preferably elongated transversely of the strip, as represented in Fig. 4, so as to dis charge water or other moistening fluid or adhesive upon the strip. I provide means to prevent the flow of liquid when the strip is not drawn upon for use and permit the discharge thereof upon the strip when the latter is drawn upon. Any suitable means may be provided to this end. Herein, I have represented a valve 31, to which is connected a plunger 32 normally elevated by a spring 33 to close the valve. The upper end of the plunger is adapted to be impinged upon by the strip as represented in Fig. 3, so that as the strip is drawn upon for use the plunger 32 is depressed, "the vvalve 31 is opened and the fluid is discharged upon the strip. If desired, a hand operated valve 34 may also be employed. H
Having thus described my invention, I desire it to be understood that although specific. terms are employed, they are used in a descriptive and generic sense and not for purposes of' limitation, the scope of the invention being .set forth in the; following claims,
