Abstract

994,606. Closing filled bags. WEST VIRGINIA PULP & PAPER CO. Sept. 18, 1963 [Sept. 25, 1962], No. 36715/63. Heading B8C. A glue applying head 23, Fig. 1, biased about a pivot 26, Fig. 3, to apply glue to the flattened mouths of bags 22, Fig. 1, before they are folded over, is fed with glue only while a bag is passing the head. The bag mouths are flattened by conveyers 39, 39<SP>1</SP> moving at the same speed as the conveyer 36 carrying the bag, and are carried through a slot 12 between spaced horizontal plates 10, 10<SP>1</SP>. In the form shown the glue feed is controlled through a micro-switch and a pneumatic valve from a sensing arm 37 which is of copper tubing so that it can be adjusted by bending. The top of a bag 22 carried on the conveyer 36 passes between guides 20, 20<SP>1</SP> adjustable under the action of a spring 43, into the slot 12 and as the bag advances its leading edge contacts the arm 37 causing a valve 24 to open and permit flow of glue to the applicator head 23. When the trailing edge of the bag releases the arm 37 valve 24 is caused to close and the flow of glue ceases. A plow 38 folds part of the bag top through 180 degrees on to the glue and rolls 40, 40<SP>1</SP> press the folded portion into place and spread the glue. Further rolls 60, 60<SP>1</SP> which may be stepped or covered with an elastically compressible material to allow for differences in thickness at the bag top complete the sealing. The pressure between rolls 40 and 40<SP>1</SP>, and 60 and 60<SP>1</SP> is adjustable by nuts 62 and 56 on rods 19 and 18 respectively. The glue used is preferably polyvinyl acetate, and the bag top may be heated by rollers or infra-red heaters before entering the device to improve the effectiveness of the adhesive.
