A packaging apparatus comprises means for feeding a plurality of webs of packaging material into a sealing means arranged transversely to seal together adjacent webs sequentially at spaced intervals and means upstream of the sealing means for splaying the webs at each transverse seal subsequent to the formation thereof to allow insertion of an article to be packaged between the webs in close filing relationship to the seal. As shown webs of packaging material are fed from rolls 14a, 14b beneath arcuate guides 20, 21 to transversely and longitudinally extending sealing heaters 23 and 24 respectively after the insertion of an article to be packaged, the string of packages then being drawn from the heaters by rolls 25, separated by a guillotine 26 and deposited on a stacker belt 27. The articles, e.g. sheets of film in folders are fed from a stack 17 to a zone 16c of a shoot 16, and a rod 29 is provided to splay the webs upstream of each transverse seal. A pressure pad 30 bears on the upper surface of the adjacent web to prevent movement of the folder as the webs are moved between the heaters 24. The packaging material may be coated with pressure sensitive adhesive and the sealing means then consists of presses for sealing the adjacent webs. The folders may be fed to the webs by a conveyer and the operation of the apparatus may be controlled by microswitches operated by the pad 30. The packages may be formed in a series by dispensing with the guillotine.
