Abstract

1,054,644. Seaming non-metallic sheet material; making flat bags. L. VAN DER MEULEN. March 3, 1964 [March 8, 1963,1 No. 8985/64. Headings B5D and B5K. A method of simultaneously cutting and heatsealing two or more superposed thermoplastic sheets, e.g. to produce bags, by clamping both sides of the cutting and sealing area between supporting and clamping members 6, 8, respectively, and moving a heated sealing member 13 through the layers from the side of the members 8 in the direction of the members 6, is characterised in that, before sealing, the superposed layers are subjected to a pressure in the cutting and sealing area which pressure is directed in the direction of movement of the member 13, the friction coefficient of the supporting surface of each member 6 being greater than that of the clamping surface of each member 8, so that at least the upper layer and intermediate layers of thermoplastic material slip relatively to each other between at least one pair of members 6, 8. As shown, supporting means 2 comprising the members 6 separated by a space 7 are mounted on a rotatable cylindrical carrier 4 and clamping means 3 comprising the members 8 separated by a space 9 are mounted on one or more conveyer chains 5. The clamping surfaces of the members 8 are made of metal and supporting surfaces of the members 6 are two rubber strips mounted a short distance apart on a metal block. The pressure, to which the thermoplastic material is subjected before sealing, is applied by one of a number of members 10 each mounted on an arm 11 of a cross 12 rotating at the same surface speed as the carrier 4 to cause the material 15 to move into the space between two members 6. Subsequently, the member 13, e.g. a heated wire, strip or knife, is pressed into the space 9 and then into the space 7 by a guide 14 and retained therein for a short time after cutting. A number of members 13 are mounted on an endless chain 16 and are each biased into the retracted position by a spring 17. The material 15, e.g. oriented polypropylene, is supplied from a roll 18 in the form of a flat tube or a number of superposed strips, is guided by roller 19, passes a member 20 which periodically slows down the speed thereof to a value similar to that of the means 2, 3, and passes a member 21 which increases the speed to the desired speed of feeding. The sealed lengths 22 are removed by a device 23. Air suction may be applied between the means 2 in a zone B to form loops in the material 15. In a modification (not shown), the carrier 4 may be replaced by one or more endless belts or chains.
