700,585. Closing bags. HESSER MASCHINENFABRIK AKT.-GES., F. Dec. 3, 1951 [Dec. 7, 1950], No. 28286/51. Class 94 (1). A method of producing a sealed tamper-proof closure on bags of paper or like material comprises pressing flat the originally-open end of the bag, folding it over inwardly one or more times and pressing it against the upstanding bag neck so produced, and adhering a strip of paper or the like on, and in neck-band fashion around, the closure thus obtained such that this strip covers and seals both the folded bag end and the side folds at this end. The sealed closure may then be bent down and cemented to the upper surface of the bag. A web 20, Fig. 4, of gummed paper drawn from a supply roll 21 over a moistening or adhesive-applying roller 23 by a reciprocated carriage 34 is presented to a gripping device 8 and a strip 3 is cut therefrom by knives 12. A plunger 9, which may be in the form of a suction head, then applies the strip 3 upon the folded end 1 of the bag against an anvil 11. The bag with the closure strip 3 attached thereto is then moved to a next station. Fig. 5, where the end 1 of the bag is pressed by a plate 30 against an anvil 14 and die 15 and folder arms 13a move to bend the laterally projecting ends of the strip through 90 degrees. The folder arms 13a and the die 15 are then withdrawn and folder elements 17 are moved in together to turn the ends of the strip 3 completely round the end of the bag. The elements 17 are then withdrawn and the die 15 moved in again to press the folded ends of the strip against the bag end. The die 15 is preferably heated.
