Abstract
655,215. Making and closing paper and like bags or cartons. DAY & SONS, Ltd., J., and NAYLOR, J. Aug. 12, 1948, No, 21292. [Classes 18, 94(i) and 94(ii)] An end of a tubular bag or carton, made of sheet material such as aluminium foil, is closed after filling or during manufacture by folding inwardly opposed triangular portions of the material extending outwardly from transverse base lines to the free edge of the bag, simultaneously flattening and folding the material on opposite sides of the bag to form a lip bent substantially at right angles along a line parallel to its edge, bringing the limits of the lip together and pressing the folded lip against the base or top of the bag. The first folding operation is effected by a pair of pivoted jaws 14, Fig. 4, which are of triangular outline with their bases positioned transversely of the bag and their apices directed towards the pivotal axes, and the second by a pair of stepped jaws 23, Fig. 5, mounted on pivots 26 and operating to form the bent lip b, shown in Fig. 7. The remaining operations are effected by apparatus as described in Specification 523,260. The various jaws are operated by cam mechanism, see Figs. 1 and 8 (not shown).
