Abstract
1306021 Closing flaps of cartons METAL BOX CO Ltd 13 Jan 1972 [12 Feb 1971] 4579/71 Heading B8C Apparatus for applying heated air to heat sealable surfaces of a pair of carton closure flaps 4, 5, Fig. 3, folded to form an acute angle relative to each other comprises an elongate hollow chamber 7 with a nozzle 8 which extends lengthwise of, and outwards from, the chamber 7 for location between the closure flaps 4, 5, has one end remote from the chamber closed at 10 and is provided with opposed slots 9, 9 which extend continuously lengthwise of the nozzle and have a width selected to direct heated air on to predetermined mating areas of the closure flaps 4, 5. One longitudinal side of each slot 9 is defined by the closed end 10 of the nozzle which is arranged to deflect air from the nozzle through the slots 99 at substantially equal mass flow rates. As shown in Fig. 1 pusher elements 1 on endless conveyer chains 2 move the cartons, in succession, past ploughs 1 which fold the closure flaps 4 to form acute angles with the corresponding closure flaps 5 before they pass over the elongate nozzles 8 which are arranged to direct heated air on to the mating areas of the pairs of flaps to effect softening of the heat sealable material. The cartons are then moved past ploughs 6 which press the flaps 4 against the flaps 5 to effect heat-sealing of one to the other. Heated air in a duct is regulated by a piston valve 12, 15 controlled by the operation of the packaging machine to direct air either through a duct 13 leading to the chamber 7 or, to an exhaust pipe 14 according to whether the machine is running, or not. In a modification, Fig. 5, not shown, when the machine is not running the hot air is directed to an auxiliary chamber (22) alongside the chamber (7) before being exhausted through a pipe (23) so that the apparatus can be kept heated ready for instant use when the main machine is switched on. While the cartons are being moved past the nozzles 8 they rest upon water-cooled guides 19 having vertical guides 20, further water-cooled guides 21 retaining the closure flaps 4 angularly spaced from the flaps 5.
