Abstract

1,108,193. Feeding sheets. KIRBY'S (ENGINEERS) Ltd. 13 June, 1966 [18 June, 1965], No. 25971/65. Heading B6B. Apparatus for feeding sheets from the bottom of a pile 16 to a machine 103, 104 comprises a pile-supporting table 11 with grooves in which one or more open-topped channel-shaped feed members 12 are mounted for reciprocation in the direction of feed, the bottom of each feed member 12 being cut away at 121 so as to act as a slide valve between the member 12 and a suction chamber 24, and the top of the member 12 having cross pieces 13 to provide openings through which suction is applied to the bottom blank. The members 12 are reciprocated by a linkage 18, 19 oscillated by eccentrics 191 on a shaft 201. The top of each cross-piece 13 projects above the surface of the table 11 so that parts of the blank tend to be bent into the spaces between adjacent pieces 13 thus ensuring a more positive feed. When the rear end of a slide moves beyond the rear edge of the suction chamber during a feeding stroke, the chamber and member 12 become open to atmosphere so that suction ceases and the feed of the sheet is continued by rollers 101, 102. The cross-piece 13 at the leading end of each member 12 has slots therein so as to allow suction to be applied to the leading edge of each sheet. According to the width of the sheets, one or more of the feed members 12 may be rendered inoperative by the insertion of filler blocks between the pieces 13. Gates 17 are adjustable to allow one sheet to pass at a time, and adjacent to the gates suction is applied to the bottom blank through an opening in the table 11 connected to a suction duct 25. This causes the bottom sheet to be drawn over rollers 251 mounted in the duct to assist in guiding the sheet beneath the gates 17. The table 11 is provided with a back stop 15 for the pile, and with angle members 161 engaging the front corners of the pile.
