Abstract

546,167. Feeding sheets. BISHOP, E. L. June 20, 1941, No. 7769. [Class 100 (i)] Blanks are fed to creasing, folding &c. machines, from a portable device mounted on wheels 26, by means of a suction device 20 mounted in a reciprocating carriage 7, 7a movable over antifriction rolls 7b in rails 5 connected to vertical stanchions 6 fitted with wheels 26. The suction device 20 is adapted to be reciprocated by a lever 8 operated by a cam 10a on the drive-shaft 12 of the feeder which is driven from the associated machine, and the shaft 12 by means of a crank 13 oscillates the piston of a suction pump 15 to reduce the air pressure in the device 20 in order to cause this to grip the forward end of the lowest blank of the pile B. The vacuum in the suction device 20 is produced instantaneously when the piston uncovers a port in the cylinder wall connected by a pipe 21 to the device 20, and the vacuum is broken when the piston reaches a relief port 15a. The blank is drawn through an adjustable gate 22 to prevent double feed, and guides 25 adjacent to the gate direct the separated blanks to feed rolls 18 driven by a belt 17 from the shaft 12, or to other forwarding devices. The oneway valve 23 of the pump 15 may be held open by a lever 24 when it is desired to put the feed out of action, and normally this allows escape of air on the inward stroke of the piston.
