Abstract
184,582. Marks, E. C. R., (Miehle Printing Press & Manufacturing Co.). May 18, 1921. Cylinder machines; gripper mechanism; stopping-arrangements; counting - apparatus.- A cylinder machine has the bed arranged to reciprocate in a vertical plane. The cylinder preferably also is reciprocated vertically in a direction opposite to the bed. The reciprocating motions may be obtained by crankmechanism from shafts which are geared together and driven by an electric motor. In the machine shown, the cylinder 45, Figs. 1, 4, and 11, is mounted in a sliding frame to which is attached a transfer table 120, Figs 7, 8, and 27, which, when the cylinder is at its upper position receives a sheet from a pile mounted on a table 19, Fig. 1, pivoted to a fixed frame 17 connected to the machine frame. The sheet is fed bv a suction device carried by an oscillating arm 178 and as the cylinder frame descends, the sheet is registered laterally against a rising and falling side gauge 126, Fig. 7, and longitudinally against the stems of grippers 56, Fig. 11, which are opened to receive the sheet by levers 57. The grippers are carried by a bar 5C which is locked in position on the cylinder by rods 51 operated by an eccentric 52. The levers 57 are mounted on a shaft 58 fitted with a roller 60, Fig. 8, operated by an arm 61 which is oscillated by tappets 65, 66, on a slide 64 reciprocated by a lever and cam on a shaft 27. During the descent of the carriage a series of suction ports in the transfer table are put into connection with a vacuum pump, which is also used for the suction feed, and if a sheet is in position on the table, a plunger 124, Fig. 23, is moved in a cvlinder connected to the vacuum pump, and this plunger operates a dog 90 pivoted to a bell-crank 89, and brings the dog into the path of a cam 93 on a reciprocating bar 94, which is thus caused to operate the bell-crank 89 and, through a rod 82 and lever 74, a bolt 75 is operated to lock the cylinder to its gear 79. The bolt 75 is automatically unlocked at the end of the upward movement of the cylinder. The cylinder is locked to its bearings during its descent by the engagement in a recess 168 of a spring-pressed roller 167, Fig. 8. on a lever arm 166 pivoted to a member mounted on the hub 46 of the cylinder and secured by a bolt 170. The cylinder can be released from this locking-device by inserting a rod in one of a series of radial holes in the cylinder end and freeing the lock by a jerk. A counting device is operated by the dog 90, or a dog similarly controlled, and in the event of the failure to feed a sheet to the table 120, an alarm bell is operated instead of the counter. If the sheet on table 120 is not transferred to the cylinder, a piston is ejected from a cylinder 122, Fig. 7, carried by the cylinder frame, and this operates a switch to cut off the current to the driving-motor. The cylinder gear 79 engages a rack 80, Fig. 1, on the bed 81 which is reciprocated in fixed vertical guides by crank mechanism from the main driving-shaft 27, Fig. 1, to which is geared a shaft 30 which reciprocates the cylinder frame. The printing is effected on the upward stroke of the cylinder and when it reaches the end of this stroke, the grippers are opened and the sheet is delivered.
