Referring to the drawings, l designates a printing-machine consistingof a'frame 2, in
which is mounted the driving-shaft 3, carryingthe driving-pulley 4, to which power is imparted from any suitable source, said shaft 3 also carrying the'fiy-wheel '5 and having a pinio n/therejon, which meshes with a main drive-gear 7, which is--mounted upon the prank-shaft 8, the latter carrying the bedcranic or separating-cam 9, which is in suitable engagement with the bed connection-arm 10, the latter being pivotally connected in any suitable manner, as by means of the pin 11-, with the type-bed 12-, which latter is mounted in a suitable portion 13 of the frame and which serves as a guide for said type-bed, it being understood that as the bed-crank cam 9 is rotated it imparts a reciprocating motion to the bed connection-arm '10, which thus reciprocates the type-bed 12 in order to bring the same into proper relation with the platen 14, suitably supported upon the frame 2 of the machine in order to make an impression. Also with the bed-crank or separating-cam 9 is the sheet-separator lever 15, which latter is fulcruined upon the shaft 16, suitably carried in the frame of the machine, said lever 15 being in the form of a yoke at its u perportion and extending beyond the she t 16 and its ends 19 serving as a support for the shaft 17, said shaft having an opening 18 therethrough and upon which is mounted a feed-gripper cylinder 20, said shaft 17 also carrying the gear 21- and said'cylinder being suitably provided with air-passages 22 therethrough extending to-the periphery thereof and communicating with the opening 18 in the shaft.

When a sheet is being removed, it is necessary to support at the feeding side of the hopper the next sheet, so that I provide a sheet-abutment 62, which consists of a suitable device adapted to pass beneath the paper and at the same timev against the front end of the pile of sheets and which is supported by the carrier 63, movable in a suitable guide 64, connected with the frame of the machine, saidabutment carrier 63 having suitable connection with an arm '65, pivotally connected with the sheet-abutment shaft 66, which also carries the actuatin -arm 67, the latter communicating with a suitable actuating-cam 68, mounted or connected with the tape-feed cylinder 29, so that as the latter is rotated the cam operates the actuating-arm in order to impart reciprocating motion to the carrier 63 in order that at the proper time the sheet-abutment is placed as before stated. The upper part of, the abutment has an angle-piece to conform to the angle of the pile of sheets.
In order to direct the sheets to their proper position, I provide the side guides 69, which are carried by the rods 70, mounted in the frame of the machine, and upon which rods the side guides may be clamped and adjusted,
said side guides'having a suitable grooveor passage 71 for the reception ofthe, paper or sheet, it being seen that the paper is fed down from the tapes 30 to the sheet-carrying apron 42 into the side guides, and in order to stop the same at the proper point above the platen I provide sheet-stops 72, which are mounted upon the rock-shaft 73., the same being spring-actuated, if desired, and carried in a suitable lug 74. said rock-shaft 73 having thereon for operating the same,
which are adapted to be engaged at the proper time by the plate 76, carried by the shaft 77, suitably mounted in the frame of the machine, said shaft 77 also carrying the operating-lever 78, which is in engagement with a cam'79 for operating the arm, said cam being carried and locked in suitable accord with the tape-feed cylinder 29, it being seen that thesaid plate? 6 is caused to hold or depress the lever 75, carried on the shaft 73, in order to raise the sheet-stop 72 and permit forward movement of the sheet or leaf at the proper time.
The operation is as follows: Power being imparted to the drive-pulley 4 causes the drive-shaft to rotate and imparts motion to the pinion 6 and to the main drive-gear" 7. This in turn actuates the bed-crank or separating-cam 9, the cam'57 for operating the suction-pump, the gear 37, and the sheetcarrying apron stop-cam 53. stated, thebed-crank 9 operates the connecting-arm 10 to impart a reciprocating motion thereto in order to move the type-bed 12 to and from the platen. In order to'feed a sheet to theposition above the platen, the separator-lever 15 is so" timed as to place the feed gripper cylinder adjacent the lower most sheet, the suction-pump 56 being operated in order to cause the suction and draw down the lowermost sheet at the same time the sheet-abutment carrier 63 is actuated forward to pass beneath and abut against the sheets while the feed-gripper cylinder ismoving away from the feed-table 27, as best understood from Fig. 5, the same being accomplished by suitable movements of the lever 15. At the same time the cam actuates the gripper 2.6 and causes the same to engage with the sheet, as seen in Fig. 5, the motion being imparted to the feed-gripper cylinder through the gear 21 and gear 28, the paper is brought around said cylinder 20 and is released by the gripper and passes along with the sheet-tapes 30, to which motion is also imparted, the saidsheet passing between the side guides 69 and upon the apron 42 until itassumes the proper position upon the platen beneath the type-bed 12, it having comein contact with the sheet-stop 72. The type-bed is now actuated to make an impression; but in order to arrest the movement of the apron at the same time the end of the locking-lever. '51 comes in contact with the shoulder 54 of the apron-carrier cam 46, as described, thus arresting the movement of the shaft and preventing movement of the apron until the impression has been taken, after whichthe o eration as above described is repeated, it 0' course being understood that the sheet-abutments are reciprocated back and forward at the proper time and that .the suction-pump is caused to create a suction to draw down the lowermost sheet, whichwill immediately be engaged As already drive-gear suitably actuated and by the gripper, and that after the impression is taken the plate 76 is operated in order to raise the stop 72 at the same time that the movement of the sheet-carrying apron 42 is started in order that the sheet can be removed from the press and another one fed to its place to receive the same.
It will be evident that various changes may be made by those skilled in the art which may come within the scope of my invention, 7 and I do not, therefore, desire to be limited in every instance to the exact construction herein shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let- 8o ters Patent, is
1. In a device of the character described, printing means, suitably-actuated sheet-" feeding devices, spring-actuated frictional means for actuating the feeding devices and positive means for arresting said'feeding devices and the sheet during the impression.
2. In a device of the character described, a type ordie bed suitably actuated, sheet-feeding devices, carrging means forsaid sheets, 96 spring-actuated ictional means for actuating the carrying devices, and positive means for arresting said/carrying means and the sheets during the impression.
3. In a device of the character described, a type or die bed, suitably-actuated sheet-feeding devices, spring-actuated frictional means for controlling the sheet, and means for automatically operating said frictional means whereby the sheet is arrested during the impression. I
4. In a device of the character described, a type or die bed suitably actuated, a sheetcarrying apron, a gear suitably actuated, a shaft upon which said gear is mounted and sprin -actuated frictional means for locking said s aft with res ect to said gear. I
5. a drive-gear suitablvactuated and loosely mounted on said shaft, a spring bearing against said drive-gear and normally locking the same with respect to said shaft, a lever suitably controlled and a cam-shoulder on said shaft with which said lever contacts to lock the shaft against rotation.

In a device of the character described, a type or die bed suitably actuated .v a feed-cylinder, a feed-table, means for reciprocating said cylinder toward and away from said table, suction devices for said cylinder, grippers for engaging the sheet, feed-tapes and means for carrying the sheet to the proper position with respect to the dies from said tapes,

In a device of the character described, a type or die bed suitably actuated, a feed-cylinder, a feed-table, means for reciprocating said cylinder toward and away from said table,'a sheet-abutment and support suitably actuated, a suction means for said cylinder, feed-tapes for carrying the sheet from said cylinder, side guides for said sheets, sheetstops, and anapron for carrying said sheets, said apron being automatically controlled.
10-; In a device of the character described, a type or die bed. suitably actuated, a lever suitably actuated, a feed-cylinder carried by said lever, grippers supported with respect to said cylinder and adapted to rotate therewith, a cam carried by said lever, a lever or dog actuated thereby and. adapted to actuate said grippers, an abutment adapted to be actuated as the cylinder is actuated and suction means for said cylinder.

In a device of the character described, a type or die bed suitably actuated, a'stationary' platen, side guides for the sheet mounted on said platen, rock-shafts mounted in journals on said platen and extendingalong the side guides and parallel therewith, sheet-stops carried by said shafts, means suitably actuated for partly rotating said shafts to raise said stops and automatic means for returning the stops to their operative position.

In a device of the character described, a type or die bed suitably actuated, a stationary platen, side guides for the sheet mounted. on said platen, rock-shafts mounted in journals on said'pl'aten and extending along the side guides and parallel therewith, sheet-stops carried by said shafts, means suitablv actuated for partly rotating said shafts to raise said stops and springs for returning the stops to their operative position.
