Be'it known that I, HOWARD M. BARBER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Stonington, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Delivery Apparatus for Printing-lvlachines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide certain improvements in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts of the sheet forwarding and retarding devices of a sheet delivery apparatus for printing machines whereby the sheet delivery car rier may be driven at a slower speed than the forwarding device without causing the sheets to buckle.
1n the accompanying drawings, the inven tion is shown in connection with a two-rev0- lution rotary cylinder printing machine but it is to be understood that it may be applied to printing machines of any type.
Figure 1 is a partial top plan view of portions of a two-revolution cylinder printing machine having applied thereto the improved sheet delivery apparatus,

In the portion of the printing press here in shown, the form cylinder is denoted by 1 and its impression cylinder by 2.
The form cylinder gear 3 is driven from a gear 4 on the drive shaft 5, which shaft is driven from a suitable motor 6.
The cam shaft 7 is driven from the form cylinder 1 through the gears 8 and 9.
Means are provided for depositing the sheets as they are fed from the impression cylinder 2., which means may, for instance, be an endless delivery carrier 10, such as that shown, described and claimed in my Specification of Letters Patent.

co-pending application filed June 8, 1909 Serial No. 500878, which endless delivery carrier is driven from the drive shaft 5 through the spur gears 4c, 11, bevel gears 12, 13, and shaft 1 1. This endless delivery carrier 10 may be provided with one or more sets of sheet 'ri-ppers 15 operated at suitable intervals to receive and deposit the sheets.
This present invention is directed to improvements in the means for conveying the shcetsfrom the impression cylinder to the sheet delivery carrier and is constructed, ar ranged and operated as follows :-The continuously driven tape carrier comprises the tapes 16 which pass around pulleys 17 on the rotary shaft 18 at their inner ends and around pulleys 19 on a rotary shaft 19* at their outer ends.
The sheets as they leave the impression cylinder 2 pass between the sheet guides 20 and the stripper fingers 21 onto the tapes 16. These sheet guides 20 extend outwardly to the point where the sheets are delivered from the endless tape carrier to the endless delivery carrier and they are supported upon cross shafts 22, 23.
At the outer end of the endless tape carrier, sheet guide fingers 24 are provided below the outer ends of the sheet guides 20, between which guide fingers 24 and the guides 20 the sheets are fed from the endless tape carrier to the endless delivery carrler.
The endless tape carrier is driven continuously as follows :A driving belt 25 passes at its inner end around a pulley 26 on a cross shaft 27 and at its outer end around a pulley 28 on the cross shaft 19*. This shaft 27 is driven through a geared connection 29, 30 from the impression cylinder gear 31, which impression cylinder gear is driven from the form cylinder gear 32.

A positive sheet forwarding device is provided for engaging the sheets on the endless tape carrier before they are released by the feeding rollers 83, 34, which sheet forwarding device comprises rollers driven at the speed of the impression cylinder and the endless tape carrier arranged to engage the opposite sides of the sheets for feeding the sheets to the grippers on the delivery carrier at the speed of the endless tape carrier.
This sheet forwarding device is constructed, arranged and operated as follows :The lower set of rollers 36 are mounted on a cross shaft 37, which shaft 37 is driven from the shaft 27 by a driving belt 38 which passes around a pulley 39 on the shaft 37 and a pulley 40 on the shaft 27.
The relative sizes of the pulleys 39 and 40 are such that the rollers 36 will be driven at the same surface speed as the impression cylinder and endless tape carrier.
The upper cross shaft 41 which bears the drop roller 42 is carried by the arms 43 of a rock shaft 44.
The shaft 37 is provided with a spur gear 45 which is in mesh at all timeswith a spur gear 46 on the shaft 41 as the shaft 41 is lowered and raised to bring the rollers 42 and 36 into and out of driving engagement with the sheets.
The means for raising and lowering the drop rollers 42 comprise a cam 47 on the shaft 7 which engages a stud or roller 48 on a connecting rod 49, the upper end of which is attached to an arm 50 of the rock shaft 44.
A sheet retarding device is provided for engaging the sheet after it has been engaged by the delivery carrier grippers so as to permit the delivery carrier to be driven at a considerably lesser speed than the tape carrier without permitting the tape carrier to cause the sheet to buckle after its advance edge has been grasped by the delivery carrier grippers. This retarding device is constructed, arranged and operated as follows :Brushes 51 are carried by the arms 52 of a rock shaft 53, which brushes are arranged over certain of the guide fingers 24 so that when the brushes are lowered they will press the sheet passing beneath the brushes, frictionally against the fingers 24. A. cam 54 on the cam shaft 7 engages a stud or roller 55 on a connecting rod 56, the upper end of which is attached to an arm 57 of the rock shaft 53. A coil spring 58, surrounding the rock shaft 53 at one end thereof, tends to yieldingly hold the retardingbrushes 51 at the limit of their downward movement and also holds the stud or roller 55 in engagement with its operating cam 54.
The relative shapes and positions of the cams 47 and 54 on the cam shaft 7 are such that when the sheet forwarding device is in operation, the retarding mechanism will be out of operation and vice versa.
In operation, as the sheet is delivered from the impression cylinder between the guides 20 and the stripper fingers 21, it will be engaged by the feeding rollers 33, Q4,
and fed along the endless carrier untii the advance edge of the sheet is in position to be engaged by the forwarding device. The drop rollers of the forwarding dex'ice are then lowered into position to grasp the sheet between them and the rollers 36 for positively feeding the sheet into position to be engaged by the delivery carrier grippers 15.
I As this operation is going on, the retarding brushes 51 are in their raised position.
As the delivery carrier grippers l5 grasp the advance edge of the sheet, the drop rollers 42 are raised and the retarding brushes 51 are lowered for pressing the sheet against the guide fingers 24. This will obviate the tendency of the endless tape carrier to feed the sheet faster than the delivery carrier.
As the next succeeding sheet is fed along the tape carrier, the retarding brushes are raised and the drop rollers again lowered as before described.
It is evident that any form of sheet delivery carried may be used in connection with the sheet forwarding and retarding devices herein described and it is evident t that various changes may be made in the construction, form and arrai'igement of the several parts Without departing from the spirit and scope of this invention; hence I do not wish to limit the invention to the exact construction herein shown, but
What I claim is 1. In a sheet delivery apparatus for print ing machines, a printing mechanism, a sheet feeding endless tape carrier driven at a certain speed and a positive sheet forwarding device located intermediate the ends of the tape carrier and driven constantly at the speed of the tape carrier arranged to be brought into and out of engagement with the sheet.
2. In a sheet delivery apparatus for print ing machines, a printing mechanism, a sheet feeding endless tape carrier driven continuously at a certain speed and a positive sheet forwarding device located intermediate the ends of the tape carrier and driven constantly at the speed of the tape carrier arranged to be brought into and out of engagement with the sheet.
3. In a sheet delivery apparatus for printing machines, a printing mechanism, a sheet delivery device, a continuously driven sheet feeding endless tape carrier and a positive sheet forwarding device located intermediate the ends of the tape carrier and arranged to be brought into engagement with both sides of the sheet for feeding it into position to be engaged by the delivery device.
4. In a sheet delivery apparatus for printing machines, a printing mechanism, a sheet delivery device, acontinuously driven sheet feeding endless tape carrier and a positive sheet forwarding device located intermediate the ends of the tape carrier and driven constantly at the speed of the tape carrier arranged to be brought into engagement with the sheet for feeding it into position to be engaged by the deliverydevice.
5. In a sheet delivery apparatus for printing machines, an endless sheet delivery carrier, a continuously driven sheet feeding endless tape carrier, and a positive sheet forwarding device located intermediate the ends of the tape carrier and driven constantly at the speed of the tape carrier arranged to be brought into engagement with the sheet for feeding it into position to be engaged by the delivery carrier.
6. In a sheet delivery apparatus for printing machines, an endless sheet delivery carrier driven at a certain speed, a sheet feeding endless tape carrier driven continuously at a higher speed and a positive sheet forwarding device driven at the speed of the tape carrier arranged to be brought into engagement with the sheet for feeding it into position to be engaged by the delivery carrier.
7. In a sheet delivery apparatus for printing machines, a sheet delivery device, a continuously driven sheet feeding endless tape carrier and a positive sheet forwarding device located intermediate the ends of the tape carrier and driven constantly at the speed of the tape carrier arranged to be brought into engagement with the sheet to forward it into position to be engaged by the delivery device and then release the sheet.
8. In a sheet delivery apparatus for printing machines, an endless sheet delivery carrier driven at a certain speed, a sheet feeding endless tape carrier driven continuously at a higher speed and a positive sheet forwarding device driven at the speed of the tape carrier arranged to be brought into engagement with the sheet to forward it into position to be engaged by the delivery carrier and then release the sheet.
9. In a sheet delivery apparatus for printing machines, a sheet feeding endless tape carrier, a positive sheet forwarding device located intermediate the ends of the tape carrier and a retarding device both arranged to be brought into and out of engagement with the sheet.
10. In a sheet delivery apparatus for printing machines, a sheet feeding endless tape carrier, a positive sheet forwarding device and a retarding device comprising brushes, both located intermediate the ends of the tape carrier and arranged to be brought into and out of engagement with the sheet.
11. In a sheet delivery apparatus for printing machines, a sheet delivery device, a sheet feeding endless tape carrier, a positive sheet forwarding device and a retarding device, both located intermediate the ends of the tape carrier and arranged to be &
brought into and out of engagement with the sheet.

In a sheet delivery apparatus for printing machines, an endless sheet delivery carrier, a sheet feeding endless tape carrier, a positive sheet forwarding device and a retarding device, both located intermediate the ends of the tape carrier and arranged to be brought into and out of engagement with the sheet;
13. In a sheet delivery apparatus for printing machines, a sheet delivery device, a sheet feeding endless tape carrier driven at a certain speed, a positive sheet forwarding device driven at the same speed and a retarding device, both located intermediate the ends of the tape carrier arranged to be brought into and out of engagement with the sheet.
14. In a sheet delivery apparatus for printing machines, an endless sheet delivery carrier driven at a certain speed, a sheet feeding endless tape carrier driven at a higher speed, a positive sheet forwarding device driven at the speed of the tape carrier and a retarding device, both the forwarding and retarding devices being located intermediate the ends of the tape carrier and arranged to be brought into and out of engagement with the sheet.
15. In a sheet delivery apparatus for printing machines, a sheet feeding endless tape carrier, a positive sheet forwarding device including drop rollers, a retarding device, both the positive sheet forwarding device and retarding device being located intermediate the ends of the tape carrier, and rotary cams arranged to bring the' drop rollers and the retarding device into and out of engagement with the sheet.
16. In a sheet delivery apparatus for printing machines, asheet feeding endless tape carrier, a positive sheet forwarding device including drop rollers, aretarding device including brushes, both the positive sheet forwarding device and retarding device being located intermediate the ends of the tape carrier, and rotary cams arranged to bring the rollers and brushes into and out of engagement with the sheet.
17. In a sheet delivery apparatus for printing machines, a sheet delivery device, a sheet feeding endless tape carrier, a positivesheet forwarding device located intermediate the ends of the tape carrier arranged to be brought into engagement with the sheet to feed it to the delivery device and a retarding device also located intermediate the ends of the tape carrier and arranged to be brought into engagement with the sheet after it has been engaged by the delivery device.
18. In a sheet delivery apparatus for printing machines, an endless sheet delivery carrier driven at a certain speed, a sheet feeding endless tape carrier driven at a higher speed, a positive sheet forwarding device driven at the speed of the tape carrier arranged to be brought into engagement with the sheet for feeding it tothe delivery carrier and a retarding device arranged to be brought into engagement with the sheet after it has been engaged by the delivery carrier, both the positive sheet forwarding device and the retarding device being located intermediate the ends of the tape carrier.
19. In a sheet delivery apparatus for printing machines, an impression cylinder driven at a certain speed, a sheet delivery carrier driven at a lesser speed and an intermediate positive sheet forwarding device driven constantly at a higher speed than the sheet delivery carrier arranged to be brought into and out of engagement with both sides of the sheet.
20. In a sheet delivery apparatus for printing machines, an impression cylinder driven at a certain speed, a sheet delivery carrier driven at a lesser speed and an intermediate positive sheet forwarding device driven constantly at the speed of the impression cylinder arranged to be brought into and out of engagement with both sides of the sheet. r
