le it known that I, I lowano M. Bauern, a citizen of the United States, and resident ot Stonington, in the county of New London and State ot Connecticut, have invented a new and use't'ul Improvementl in Sheet- Delivery Apparatus for PrintiIig-Machines, ot which the following is a specification.
The object ot this invention is to provide a reciprocating sheet delivery mechanism capable of being used in connection with printing machines operatingat a high rate ot' speed, and consists more particularly in the provision oi. a pair oill coacting reciprocating' menibers each arranged to travel a lesser distance than the lengths of the sheets being delivered, tor accomplishing` the result above set forth, thus rendering the mechanism applicable 't'or use where the ordinary reciprocating mechanism would be inapplicable because of the limit of the speed at which the ordinary reciprocating delivery mechanism can be run where the same has to travel a distance equal to the lfull lengths of the sheets being delivered.
ln the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of portions of a tivo-revolution cylinder printing machine having applied thereto my improved reciprocating sheet delivery mechanism, the parts being in the position which they assume when the outer reciprocating member is receiving the sheet from the inner reciprocating member, the outer reciprocating member' being at the limit oit its inward movement and the inner reciprocating member being at the limit ot' its outward moven'ient. Fig. 2 is a top plan view ot' certain of the parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 2 is a detail view showing the bracket and the pin for con trolling the closing of the delivery grippers carried by the outer reciprocating member. The delivery mechanism comprises `a pair oil coacting reciprocating members, each member being arranged to travel a distance less than the lengths oi? the sheets being deposited. In the present instance the outer member is shown as having an oscillating movement in a curved path and the inner member as having a rectilinear reciprocatory movement.
The outer member ot the reciprocating sheet delivery mechanism comprises two side arms 12, 13 fixed to a rock sha'tt 14k in suitable bearings in depending brackets 15, 1G, oit' the side frames 17, 18, of the machine. The delivery gripper-s arranged in pairs, are carried by the outer reciprocating member as follows. One gripper l2) oil each pair ot grippers is fixed upon a crossbar QOconnecting the upper ends oit the arms 12, 13, and the other gripper 2l ot each pair of gripper-s is fixed upon a rock sha't't 22 mounted in the upper endsl of the arms 12, 13, below the cross bar Q0. A spring 23 surrounding` a bar 24 connected to an arm Q5 tixed to the rock shaft 22, teiuls to hold the grippers either closed or open according as the-arm is moved past center in one direction or the other. The rock shaft 22 is provided with an arm QG which rides over a pin 2T carried by a bracket 28 on the side :trame 1S, when the outer reciprocating member ot the delivery mechanism approaches the limit ot" its outward movement. This pin QT will rock the arm 20 sulliciently to rock the arm 25 past center so that the spring' 23 will hold the grippers 2l open until the outer recipro eating member reaches the limit ot its inward movement. An arm 2l) Yt.\:ed to the rock shaft 22, engages the cross-bar 2O for limiting the movement of the grippers 21 away from the grippers 19.
The rock shaft 22 is rotated a suiiicient distance to cause the sp-ring 23 to close the grippers as the outer reciprocating member reaches the limit of its inward movement. This is accomplished by providing a bracket 30, carrying a pin 31, which will engage the arm 25 and rocks it past center as the outer reciprocating member nears the limit of its inward movement. A rod 32 connects the arm 13 of the outer reciprocating member with a crank disk on the stud shaft 33* driven from the shaft 7, for controlling the outward and inward movements of the said outer reciprocating member.
The inner member of the reciprocating sheet delivery mechanism comprises a sheet guide carriage having side frames 34, 35, and cross connecting bars 36, 37, carrying longitudinally arranged guide bars 38. The carriage is mounted on wheels 39 carried by the side frames 34, 35, and fitted to travel back and forth along the tracks 40, 41, which tracks are supported from the side frames 17, 18, by studs 42, 43. The side frames 34, 35, of the carriage are provided along their bottom edges with racks 44 which mesh with pinions 45, 46, fixed to a cross shaft 47, rotatably mounted in the side frames 17, 18, of the machine, beneath the sheet guide` carriage. This rotatable shaft 47 has a pinion 48 fixed thereto which is engaged by th-e teeth of a rack bar 49 projecting from the arm 13 of the. outer reciprocating member; rollers 50, 51, carried by a bracket 52 hinged on the cross shaft 47, serving to hold the rack bar in posit-ion in engagement with the pinion 48. l
The connection between the rack and pinion 49, 48, is such that the outer and inner members of the sheet delivery mechanism are simultaneously reciprocated in opposite directions and are brought into operative position with respect to each other when the outer member reaches the limit of its inward movement and the inner member reaches the limit of its outward movement.
The sheets are fed from the impression cylinder to the reciprocating sheet delivery mechanism by any suitable means, such, for
instance as the endless tape carrier and posi-V tive sheet forwarding device shown herein, a brief description of which follows. The endless tape carrier comprises tapes 53 which pass around pulleys 54 on the rotary shaft 55 at their outer ends and around pulleys 5G on the shaft 57 at their inner ends. As the sheets leave the impression cylinder, they pass between upper and lower sheet guides 58, 59, and as they leave the endless tape carrier to pass on to the inner reciprocating member of the sheet delivery mechanism, they pass between the upper sheet guides 58 and the lower sheet guides 60. This endless tape carrier is driven as follows: A belt 61 passes around a pulley (32 on a shaft 63 adjacent to the impression cylinder 2 and also passes around a pulley G4 on the shaft 55. This shaft 63 may be driven from the impression cylinder gear 65 through an intermediate gear GG.
The sheet forwarding device is constructed as follows: The cross sha-ft 67 which carries the lower set of feeding rollers 68, is driven from the shaft 63', through a belt and pulley connection 69, y 70, 71. The upper cross shaft 72 which bears the upper set of drop rollers 73, is carried by arms 74 fixed to a rock shaft 7 5. The drop rollers 73 are raised and lowered under the control of a cam 7 6 on the shaft 7, through a connecting rod 77 and arm 78l fixed tothe rock sh aft 75.
lt is to be understood that suitable means, not shown herein, are employed for insuring the delivery of the sheet from the impression cylinder grippers between the guides 58 and 59 to the endless tape carrier.
In operation, the endless tape carrier feeds the sheets from the impression cylinder out tov the positive sheet forwarding device. The upper and lower sets of rollers 73 and 68 of the positive sheet forwarding device are caused to engage the sheet and feed it 95 along between the guides 58 and GO on to the guides 38 of the reciprocating inner member of the sheet delivery mechanism. This inner member will guide the advance edge of each sheet into position to be engaged by the grippers 19, 21, of the reciprocating outer member of the sheet delivery mechanism at a point well out over the table 10. The two members of the sheet delivery mechanism will then travel apart, the outer member 105 moving outwardly to a point beyond the outer edge of the pile of sheets on the t-able 10 and the rinner member moving inwardly to a point beyond the inner edge of the pile of sheets. As the outer memberapproaches 110 the limit of its outward movemenhthe grippers 19, 21, will be released from their engagement with the sheet and the inner member at the same time will have been with: drawn from beneath the inner edge of the 115 sheet, thus permitting the sheet to fall between the two members onto the table. As the outer member is moved inwardly to engage the next succeeding sheet, the grippers 19, 21, will remain open until they are 12o tripped by the pin 31 and caused to close Linder the action of the spring 23.
In a sheet delivery mechanism constructed, arranged and operated substantially as herein shown and described, reciprocating mech- 125 anism is provided which will be applicable for use in connection with presses operating at a high rate of speed for the reason that the two reciprocating members of the .delivery mechanism .each travel a portion of 13o the complete distance across the pile oit sheets from the front to the rear thereof. lt will be seen that this reciprocating sheet delivery mechanism can thus be operated more rapidly than where a reciprocating delivery mechanism is employed in which a member is required to travel the t'ull length ot the sheet being delivered.
Vhat I claim is:
l. A sheet delivery mechanism :tor printing machines comprising a pair of coacting reciprocating members arranged to move in opposite directions for receiving and depositing the sheets, the movement of each member being less than the lengths oit' the sheets being deposited.
2. A sheet delivery mechanism for printing machines comprising a pair of coacting reciprocating members arranged to move simultaneously in opposite directions :t'or receiving and depositing the sheets, the movement of each member being less than the lengths of the sheets being deposited.
3. A sheet receiving table and a sheet delivery mechanism theretor comprising an inner longitudinally reciprocating member arranged to carry a sheet part way across the receiving table and an outer longitudinally reciprocating` member arranged to engage the advance edge o't the sheet and complete the movement of the sheet, the Inovement of each member toward and away from the other member being less than the lengths of the sheets being delivered.
t. A sheet receiving table and a sheet. delivery mechanism therefor comprising inner and outer oppositely longitudinally reciprocating members, the inner member being arranged to carry a sheet part Way across the receiving table and the outer member being arranged to engage the advance edge of the sheet and complete the movement of the sheet, the movement of each member toward and away from the other member being less than the lengths ot the sheets being delivered.
5. A sheet receiving table and a sheet delivery mechanism therefor comprising a pair ot co-acting longitudinally reciprocating members, one having a rectilinear movement and the other an oscillating movementr in a curved path and one being arranged to carry a sheet part way across the receiving table and the other being arranged to engage the advance edge ot` the sheet and complete the movement of the sheet.
6. A sheet receiving table and a sheet delivery mechanism therefor comprising an inner rectilinear reciprocating member arranged to carry a sheet part way across the receiving table and an outer member oscillating in a curved path arranged to engage the advance edge of the sheet and complete the movement of the sheet.
7 A sheet delivery mechanism for printing machines comprising outer and inner oppositely long tud inall y reciprocating n iembers the outer member being arranged to grasp the advance edge ot the sheet when the two members are adjacent to each other and to release the sheet when the two members are separated trom each other to permit the sheet to be delivered from between the two members.
S. A sheet delivery mechanism for printing machines comprising outer and inner oppositely longitln'linally reeilnocaiting members the outer member having grippers arranged to grasp the advance edge of the sheet when the two members are adjacent to cach other and to releasel the sheet when the two members are separated 'trom each other to permit the sheet to be delivered irom between the two members.
9. A sheet receiving table and a sheet delivery mechanism therefor comprising outer and inner oppositely lrmgitudimilly reciprocating members the outer member being arranged to grasp the advance edge ot the sheet when the two members are adjacent to each other over the tabli and to release the sheet when the two members are separated :trom each other7 tor depositing the sheet upon the table from between the two members.
10. A sheet receiving table and a sheet delivery mechanism therefor comprising outer and inner oppositely longitudinally reciprocating members the outer member having gripper-s operated to grasp the advance edge ot the sheet when the two members are adjacent to each other over the table and to release the sheet when the two members are separated from each other, for depositing the sheet upon the table from between the two members.

13. A sheet delivery mechanism for printing machines comprising two oppositely longitudinally reciprocating members arranged. to be moved toward each other Yfor transferring the advance edge of the sheet from one to the other and moved away from each other for dropping the sheet between them.` i
14. A sheet receiving table and a sheet,
rdelivery mechanism therefor comprising two longitudinally reciprocating m-embers, one member being arranged to carry the sheet part way out over the table and the other member arranged to receive the ad- Vance edge of the sheet from the iirst named member and carry it to the limit of its outward movement and permit it to drop between the members onto the table.
15. A she-et receiving table and a sheet delivery mechanism therefor co-mprising two oppositely longitudinally reciprocating members arranged the one to carry the sheet part way out over the table and the other to receive the advance edge of the sheet and carry it the balance of the way and permit it to drop between the two members.
16. A sheet delivery mechanism for printing machines comprising inner and outer coi-acting longitudinally reciprocating members, the outer member being arranged to receive and grasp the advance edge of a sheet fed thereto by the inner member as the outer member reaches the limit of its inward movement and to release the sheet as it reaches a predetermined point on its outward movement to permit the sheet to drop between the two members.
17. A sheet delivery mechanism for printing machines comprising inner and outer coi-acting longitudinally reciprocating members, the outer member having grippers arranged to receive and grasp the advance edge ot' a sheet fed thereto by the inner member as the outer member reaches the limit of its inward movement and to release the sheet as it reaches a predetermined point i-n its outward movement to permit the sheet to drop between the two members.

A sheet receiving table and a sheet delivery mechanism therefor comprising inner and outer co-acting longitudinally reciprocating members, the outer member being arranged to travel part way across the table less than the lengths of the sheets being delivered, said outer member being arranged to receive and grasp the advance edge of a sheet fed thereto by the inner member as the outer member' reaches the limit of its inward movement and to release the sheet as it reaches a predetermined point in its outward movement.
19. A sheet receiving table and a sheet delivery mechanism therefor comprising inner and outer co-acting longitudinally reciprocating members, the outer member being arranged to travel part way across the table a lesser distance than the lengths of the sheets being delivered, said outer member having grippers arranged to receive and grasp the advance edge of a sheet fed thereto by the inner member as the outer member reaches the limitl` of its inward movement and to rel-ease .the sheet as it reaches a predetermined point in its outward movement.
20. A sheet delivery mechanism for printing machines comprising an outer reciprocating member arranged to travel a lesser distance than the lengths ofthe sheets being delivered and an inner reciprocating member arranged to be moved outwardly to carry a sheet into position to be engaged by the outer memberand to be moved inwardly to; withdraw it from beneath the sheet tov permit the sheet to be deposited from lbetween the two members.
21. A sheet receiving table and a sheetdelivery mechanism therefor comprising an outer reciprocating member arranged to travel part way` across the table a lesser distance than the lengths of the sheets being delivered and an inner reciprocating member arranged to be moved outwardly part way across the table to carry a sheet into position tov be engaged by the outer member and to be moved inwardly to withdraw it from beneath the sheet to permit the sheet to be deposited from between the two members.
