Abstract
473,406. Feeding sheets. PALLIN, T. April 6, 1937, Nos. 9816 and 9817. Convention dates, April 8, 1936 and Dec. 1, 1936. [Class 100 (i)] Sheets or cards are fed from the bottom of a stack 11 by means of a reciprocating slide 2 formed with suction apertures 6, and to prevent double feed the slide is formed transversely with two or more recessed parts 5 which cause the separated sheet to be corrugated at these parts, and the separated sheet is moved out past adjustable stops 12 which are formed with convex parts corresponding to the recesses 5, the parts 5, 12 being set so as to permit of the passage of one thickness of sheet, and being designed to prevent a plane sheet adhering to the lowermost sheet from being fed past the stops 12. The slide 2 is moved over guides 3 by means of a suctionactuated piston 18 mounted in a cylinder 17 which is fixed in position, the piston 18 being connected by a rod 19 to the slide 2. The air pressure in the separator and in the cylinder 17 is controlled by means of a slide valve 25 moving in a cylinder 27 and by means of a rotary cock 45 which is operated from the slide 2. In the position shown in Fig. 1, the slide valve is held by spring-controlled catches 56, which are released by the operation of the machine to which the sheets are fed and permit a spring 55 to move the valve to the left. In the position shown the cock 45 is set so as to connect the right-hand end of the cylinders 22 to atmosphere via a pipe 44 and passages 51, 48, 47, 50. When the slide valve is moved to the left the solid parts 33, 34 of the valve uncover apertures which permit an exhaust apparatus to be connected via a pipe 37, pipe 39, and passages 9, 9a to the separator 2 and also to the cylinder 17. Simultaneously the right-hand end of cylinder 17 is connected to atmosphere. The air pressure in cylinder 17 is not reduced sufficiently to move the piston 18, and with it the separator 2, until the bottom sheet has adhered to the suction apertures. When the sheet is moved to the left the stops 12 exert a scraping action on the sheet and prevent double feed. The movement of the slide 2 actuates the cock 45 which then connects the exhaust tube 37 to the righthand end of cylinder 27, and the valve 25 is thus drawn to the right and the suction is cut off from the slide 2 and is connected to the right-hand end of the cylinder 18, and so the piston 18 is returned to the right and with it the slide 2. The valve 25 is finally held in the position shown in Fig. 1, until again released by the associated machine.
