Sheet - separators. -Sheets or cartons are separated from a pile by means of reciprocating cylin. ders 7 of air pumps comprising also reciprocating pistons 8, which are moved re latively to the cylinders 7 alter suckers 29 on the cylinders 7 engage the bottom sheet of a pile resting on supports 4, 5. From the position shown in Fig. 5, in which the suckers are in the pile contact position, the pistons 8 are lowered to reduce the air pressure in the cylinders 7 and thus separate the bottom sheet. The pistons 8 are operated by lever mechanism and a cam on shaft 26. Then the cylinders 7 are also lowered as well as the pistons, and the detached sheet is carried to a position level with a pair of feed rollers 15, 16, and the cylinders remain at rest while the pistons are raised to restore the air pressure and release the sheet. Finally both the cylinders and pistons are raised to engage the next sheet. The cylinders 7 move in fixed guides 6, and are supported on a base 14 which is also reciprocated by lever mechanism and a cam on the shaft 26. Sheet-carriers.-The detached sheet is fed by rollers 15, 16 geared together and driven from the cam shaft 26. The rollers 15 are mounted in oscillating arms 22 and move to the right to grip the separated sheet, which is then advanced to the left by the rollers 15, 16.
