Be ilh known that L-TnoMAs C. SHEEHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful PrintingMacliiiie, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to printing machines, and particularly to that class of machines known as self-feeding automatic platen presses.
In order to do high class Work in one or more colors on this kind of a press, a perfeet register of the sheet, as Well as a smooth and easy gripper motion, is demanded. My invention provides for these features and also for a novel and improved construction and arrangement of parts in such a manner that the noise and vibration incidental to the operation of the machine are reduced, if not entirely absent.
in carrying out my invention, 1 provide simple but effective means for placing the sheet in exact position on the registering table, and a gripper mechanism, adapted to travel in a direction parallel to the printing surface of the platen.
Other valuable features, as well as a preferred form of carrying out the invention. are disclosed in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, in which like parts are indicated by like reference numerals, and in which Fgure l is a side elevation of a press en1- bodying my invention. Fig. a view of the side of the registering devices opposite that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail view, and Fig. 5 is a detail view of parts of the side registering device.
Referring more particularly to Fig. l,
the reference numeral 1 indicates the side frames of the machine, for suitably sup-- porting the component parts of the same. The said frames are connected in any suitable and convenient manner. 2 indicates the main shaft extending transverse y of the machine, and to which motion is i1nparted by means of the 3, meshing,- with the pinion i, to which power is applied in indicates the bed carrying the inking mechanism or" well known construction and of which only the outlines are shown. The bed is pivoted in as the frame at 6 and oscillates in the Well known manner through the instrumentality of the connection 7 and crank 8 carried by the shaft 2 on one side of the machine. in the present instance, there is shown a pneu matic feeding device 9, of usual construction, and to which power is applied by means of the hose 10 and air cylinder 11, whose piston is operated by means of the rod 12, carried by the eccentric ring 13, on the shaft 14:, to which motion is applied by 111651333 of the gear 15 meshing with the aforesaid pinion i. The said gear has a crank to transmit motion to the shaft 16 by means of rod 17 and crank 18. Upon said shaft the delivery gripping mechanism is mounted by means of swinging arms 19, only one of which is seen.
It is not thought necessary to go into de' tails of the construction or operation of the above parts, inasmuch as the same are thought to be well known, and form no part of the invention.
Between the side frames and adjacent to the r'eed (see Figs. 9. an. 3) is located the registering table 20, hereinafter called the table, which is supported on and between bracketsfll. The brackets are pivoted on a shaft 22. and are adapted to be swung up Ward. taking the table with them, so as to permit of an unobstructed View of the interior parts of the machine, and to aid in cleaning or when making ready. Nor molly the table and brackets are held in position by their weights, and to this end 23, which rest upon the side frames. Be-
tween the brackets and on the table are mounted the various devices for registering the sheets and placing the same in position for the grippers.
The tapes, 2%, pass over the surface of the table, around rolls 25 and 26, and idlers 27. The tapes may be driven in any manner, and carry the sheet from the feed to front registering gages 28. The sheet is carried betweenthe tapes and adjustably mounted friction rollers 29, on a rock shaft 181, and under. longitudinal guide bars 30. The latter. are adjustably mounted on a transverse slotted bar 33., Which further carries an adjustable stop 32. v
in order to obtain a perfect side register, I have provided means for gripping the sheet and carrying it sidevvise to a predetermined position. This manner of sideregfrom right to left, or vice versa.
A side registering block 33 (see Fig. 5),
is provided having a plate 34 which is flush with the top of the table. The lower edge of the block over the plate 34 is made slanting to permit the sheets to enter and to hold the edge against the plate and table. The platev 34 has an integral vertically extending portion by which it is secured to the block. This portion also serves as a stop to receive the'edge of the paper. The said block is capable of a reciprocating motion, and is so positioned that the sheet in traveling over the tapes passes between the block and the plate, which now move and push or crowd the sheet against the side stop 32. Looking at Fig. 5, this motion would be to the right.
On the block is pivoted a registering gripper 35, which is lifted from contact with the plate 34 while the sheet is being pushed against the side stop. The gripper then acts on the sheet, and carries it back and lets go of it, after which the sheet continues to travel toward the gages.
It will be understood that as the side stop and the register block are adj ustably mounted, any size sheet may be registered. Moreover, it does not matter how the sheet is fed on the tapes; when coming opposite the register block, it will be pushed toward the side stop and thence carried back positively to a certain point. In other words, I do not depend upon the pushing of the sheet to register the same, but I depend upon the gripper to always grip the sheet at a certain point and carry it back and side register it at another point. The sheet may be crowded more or less against the side stop, according to the manner in which it is fed to the tapes; but the gripper always acts positively at predetermined points.
In order to accomplish the above results, the register block is mounted on a recipro- .cating or sliding bar 36, to which motion is applied by means of a lever 37, pivoted on a projection 38, and carrying a cam roll 39, coperating with a cam 40, on the shaft 22, (Fig. 3). A spring 41 keeps the roll in engagement with thecam, and a screw 37 is provided on the bar 36 for taking up lost motion.
For actuating the register gripper 35 I have shown the following means, a friction roll 42 is mounted upon the said gripper arm, and is kept in constant engagement with a bar 43 by means of a spring 44. The said bar is mounted on and rocks with a shaft 45, which, in turn is operated by means of a lever 46, carrying a cam roll 47, which engages a cam 48 on the shaft 22. (See Fig. 1.)
The bar 43 extends the en 'e width of the table, so that the register block may be placed at any point on the reciprocating or sliding bar 36, without disengaging the roll 42 fromthe bar 43. Consequently the register gripper will always be in working'po-' sitio y In practice, I provide two register blocks, one for left and one for right register.
. When registering to the right, the parts will be in the position shown in Fig. 3. When registering to the left, the block 33 is exchanged with a left-hand one of similar construction, (not shown) but adaptedto act in the opposite direction, and the lever 37 is moved to the opposite side of the machine and there pivoted upon a projection 49 and connected to the bar 36. It then cotiperates with a cam 50' of similar construction to the cam 40, so. it will be seen that when changing register, it is only necessary to change the register blocks and this lever,
from one side of the machine to the other. Of course the adjustable side stop 32 is moved into position to correspond with the position of the register block, and thescrew 37 is moved to the other side of the machine. a,
On the brackets 21 is mounted a rock shaft 52, carrying a plurality of rubber rollers 53 (see Fig. 4), which serve the purpose of squeezing or crowding the sheet toward the front gages.
The gages are mounted upon a rock shaft 54 which at one side carries a cam roll 55 in engagement with a cam 56. This cam is pivoted on the brackets 21, at 57, and
operated by means of a forked connection 58, carrying a cam roll 59, co-acting with a cam 60, on the shaft 22. The shaft 52 is rocked by means of a lever 61, carrying a roll 62, in engagement with a cam 63 on the shaft 22, adjacent to the cam 48.
The operation of the abovedevices is as follows: The sheet is fed from the feed 9 on the table, when it travels ontop of the -tapes,-till it reaches the front gages 28.
Previously the shaft 52 has been rocked, lifting the rollers 53 and allowing the sheet to pass under the same. The side register 33, now acts and crowds the sheet against the side stop 32, and while this takes place the shaft 45 is rocked, this lifting the roll 42 and preventing the register gripper from acting. After the sheet has been pushed against the side stop, the bar 43 on the shaft the sheet, and carry it over to perfect the side register. When the shaft 52 isrocked back to bring the rollers 53 down on the paper, the said rollers will descend ahead of the motion of theshaft on account of a spring 64. This will easily be understood from an inspection of Fig. 4. The arms carrying the rollers 53 are pivoted on a block 64 on the shaft 52 and a pin 64 45, descends allowing the gripper to seize trated, take the following form:
Master erated by the means which operates the cam 56. This is done in order to permit the grippers to pass as close to the surface of the platen as possible, and to allow stiff paper to bend into proper position after the grippers have seized it. After the sheet has been seized by the grippers and has traveled to the platen the turning lip and the cam .56 again move upward, thus restoring the front gages to their normal position.

Rotary motion is applied to shaft 22 by any meansas a trainol gears including a gear 166, pinion 16?, gear, 168 and intermediate gear 169 meshing with the large gear 3. The pinion 167 carries a crank 16? which connects by means of a rod 1% with the feed table 170, for transmitting motion to he feed table carries a rack 171 meshing with a gear 172 "on a pneumatic roller 1T3, for oscillating this roller and starting the sheet upon its travel. Suitable guides as 174: areprovided for keeping the sheet from coming in contact with parts of the mechanism. Means for feeding the sheet by hand is also provided in the shape of posts 175 to which the feed board may be'attached. When thus feeding by hand, the sheet passes over the table be 'ncath friction rollers 176, mounted upon rockshaft 17 7 This is actuated by means of a roll 17 8 and cam 179, whereby the friction rollers are lifted at regular intervalsto permit theshcet to pass under them. Gages 180 of suitable construction are mounted on a second rockshaft 181, on which is mounted a lip 182. This is in engagement with a other lip 183 mounted on the rockshaft 177.
'When the lip 183 is pressed down by means of the roll 1(8 and cam 179, it serves to-depress the lip 182 and raise the gages 180 and 129 out of the way of the sheet. These means are of course rendered inoperative when the automatic feed is used.

What I do claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
1. ln a printing machine, the combination or" a registering table pivotally mounted near one end on the frame of the machine, tapes movable along said table for feeding sheets, adjustably mounted friction rollers for engaging the sheets, a slotted transverse bar, a plurality of longitudinal guide-bars on the transverse bar, and an adjustable side stop on said transverse bar.
