To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, O'r'ro Kmscir, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, city of New York, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tape-Frames and FeedenFronts for Printing-Presses, of whichthefollowing is a specification.
The invention comprises certain improve men-ts in sheet feeders for printing presses, the same relating more especially to a tapeframe and feeder front, and to front and side registering means upon the feeder front. A particular object is toimprove the construction and operation of such devices and their: manner of coordination. A further object is so to construct and organize the parts as to permit the forwardly projecting structure to be positioned, over the regular feed table of the press. These ends are at tainedby the features of construction and relation hereinafter described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings illustrating the preferred embodiment of the mechanism.

The sheets fed from the stack arc deposited upon endless traveling tapes 6, by which they are carried forward at a descendiing inclination to registering devices mounted on the feeder front 7. The said tapes pass around a roller 8 in the frame 2 and another roller 9 in the forward portion of a fiat sloping tape-frame 10. This tapeframe comprises side bars 11 connected by suitablestructural cross members, and carrying at their forward ends constituting the feeder front 7. Arms 12 are pivoted upon a transverse rod 13 extending between the side bars 11 toward the rear and bear rollers 141 resting upon the lower courses of the tapes, to take up slack therein. The rear ends of the bars 11 are pivot:
ally connected to the frame 2 at 15, so that a table memberthe whole forwardly projecting structure can be swung up or down. By virtue'of this mounting and the Cl1SpOS1l31OI1S whereby the under side of the tape-frame and feeder 7 front are left unobstructed, the feeder can be applied to a press by merely moving its frame 2 up to the regular feed table 16 and lettting down the frame 10 like a draw bridge to spanthe space between the mechanism 5 and the gripper cylinder 17' of the press. In this position the tape-frame is supported partly upon the feed table beneath, forwhich purpose its side bars may be provided with feet 18.
Front registering devices 20 cooperate with the feed surface of the table member 7 and with extensions thereof formed by forward projections 21, which overlie the gripper cylinder 17 and extend slightly beyond the front stops 22.
)Oth the front registering devices and the projections are laterally shiftable; and to hold the projections in any selected positions there is a transverse clamp bar 26, which passes substantially all the way across beneath the tablemember, and under the extensions 23, which it is formed to engage. A longitudinal groove 27 in the upper face of the clamp bar receives a down-turned lug 28 on the end of each extension, so as to prevent all possibility of forward displacement of the projections.
The clamp bar 26 is clamped in its turn by two-armed-clamp levers 29 disposed longitudinally and lying close to the under side of the table member 7. The said levers are fulcrumed upon pivots 30 near their forward ends and are acted upon at their rear ends by a rotatable transverse clamp rod or cam member 31, having a handle 32 in projecting relation at one side of the feeder front. The said rod passes between thetails of the levers and the table member 7, and has cut-away portions 33 constituting low areas, which relieve the pressure on the clamps when the rod is turned to bring these portions over the levers. The forward portions of the levers have recesses 34: formed to receive the clamp bar and to hold the same in a fixed position lengthwise of thefeeder. Owing to the interlocking engagement of the clamp levers, clamp bar, and the rear extensions '23, and the limited movement permitted to the levers by the actuating and holding member 31, when the latter is moved to release the pressure, the parts are retained in assembled relation while unelamped and during the transverse shifting of the members 21.
The levers 29 are disposed alongside of fixed longitudinal pieces 35, from which the pivots 30 project. Said pieces are secured to the under side of the table member 7 by screws 36 passing into the portions of the member at opposite sides of a transverse slot 37,.which table portions are accordingly united by the longitudinal pieces.
A rock-shaft 38 extends transversely across the feed front at a distance above the same, and is utilized as the immediate support and operating means for the front registering devices. The end portions of the rock-shaft are journaled in brackets 89 rising from the sides of the feeder frame; and it is'oscillated by means of a cam 40 on a transverse rotary shaft l0 in the frame 2, a cam roll lever 41 pivoted at 42 to said frame and held to the cam by a spring 43, and a link 44 pivoted to said lever at one .end and at the other adjustably pivoted in a slotted arm 4-5 carried by the rock-shaft. The driving connections are thus located in the frame 2, or at the side of the frame 11, or above the same, so that they do not encroach upon the space reserved for the press feeder table 16.
Each .of the front registering devices includes a rocker-arm 4G fixed to the rocle shaft 38 and extending downward into proximity to the front feed surface. Pivoted to the lower end of this arm at 4-7 is another, forward extending, short arm or tip 4:8, which may have a rearward and upward extending tail 4-9, behind the arm l6. The members 40 and +8 constitute a pivotally-jointed, reciprocatory carrier for a. flexible forwarding blade 50, of which the part 48 is the immediate holder. The said blade 50 consists of a length of flat spring, which normally lies longitmlinally along the feed surface, so as to bear 'lrictionally with its flat under face upon the sheet s, when the latter has been brought beneath it by the action of the tapes. The blades operate over the surface of the table por tion 7 and its forward extensions ll, and the latter are formed with recesses wherein are mounted rollers 51, the tops of which constitute slightly raised movable portions of the surface. The rear ends of the blades are secured in slots in the holders 4:8, and their forward ends are preferably free. These ends being in advance of the sheet as long as they are close to the feed surface and being lifted while the sheets are carried forward by the gripper cylinder, have no opportunity to engage or injure the paper, but it is obvious that they may be slightly turned up if desired.
Each front registering device includes means for pressing the flexible blades against the feed surface at a point forward of the holders. Such means preferably includes, for each device, an arm 52 pivotally hung upon the rock-shaft 38 or a bearing encircling the same, said arm extending forward and downward in front of the blade carrier and termii'iating in a pressure roller 53 normally resting upon the blade 50 directly above the roller 51. Each arm 52 is desirably composed of a pair of members at opposite sides of the arm 4-6, being connected by the axle of the roller 53 and by a piece 54, through which is threaded an adjustable abutment screw 55, the rear end of which is in position to be encountered by the arm 46 after the latter has executed the major portion of its forward moven'icnt. The pressure roller is loaded by weights 56 placed upon a rod 57 rising from the arm 52. By removing a nut 58 weights may be added or removed, to vary the pressure in accordance with the characteristics of the paper being fed.

The abutmentwhich stops relative movement after a period of forward movement of the carrier comprlses a screw 59 threaded through the tail d9of the holder l8 and adapted to strike 'againstthe back of the arm 46. Thefstop-which limits the reverse relative movement upon the backward movement of the carrier is a screw 60 extending downward and forward through the arm 46 to bear upon the top of the holder 48.
The operation of the front registering devices will now be described. When the sheet is brought to them by the tapes they are disposed and held in the position of Fig. 3. In this condition, each blade 50 having been drawn rearward against theresistance of the pressure'means, its holder 48 is against the abutment 60 and the blade is inclined rearward and slightly upward from its forward point of contact with the roller 51, thus presenting a tapering, elongated throat into which the paper is introduced until stopped by the increasing contraction of the space. In this way'the forward edge of the sheet is given a preliminary alining. The arms 46 now rock forward, carrying the fulcrums of the holders 48 with them. Owing to the resistance to the passage of the springs between the rollers 51, this forwar ilinoveinent produces a relative angular movement between the members-l6, l8 of each blade carrier, until the tails "l9, through their stops 59, contact with the arms 46. This relative movement has the effect of laying the blades substantially flat upon the paper for the majority of their length, closingthe tapering throats. The blades thus frlctlonally engaged with the paper and pressed thereagainst by the weighted pressure rollers 53, advance the sheet until its forward edge abuts against the front stops 22. The slight remaining extent of forward movement then brings the carrier arms 46 against the abutment screws 55, and thereafter the pressure tion represented in Fig.3.
Reciprocation of the slide may be effected by a face cam 67 on the shaft 40 a cam roll lever 68, a link 69 connecting said lever with an arm 70, the foregoing parts being shaft 71 extending forward adjacentthe side of the tape-frame 10 and bearing the arm at its rear end, and a gear segment 7 2 011 the forward end of this shaft meshing with rack teeth 7 3 on the slide. These driving connections likewise leave the space heneath the frame 10 unobstructed; and to per mit the transn'iission line to break when the frame is moved about its pivot a separable coupling 7+: may be introduced therein. The face cam 67 bears laterally against a collar 75 on the shaft 40, vith which collar it-may be reversibly engaged by pin and hole connections 76, so constructed and aranged that the cam can be moved outward on the shaft to disconnect it from the collar, displaced 'rotatively through an angle of 180 relatively thereto, and then reengaged. The spring 77 connected to the cam roll lever 68 serves to hold the cam against the collar so as to prevent disconnection while the mechanism is in operation. The purpose of shifting the cam will appear hereinafter. v
Cooperating with the slide is a pressure device 78 capable of movement to and from the slide, and advantageously mounted upon the same rock-shaft 38 which supports and operates the front registering devices. The said pressure device comprises an arm 7 9 fixed to the shaft, and like the front regis tering devices capable of being shifted lon-* located in the frame 2, a longitudinal rockgitudinally thereon to occupy different positions transversely of the feeder front. The said arm projects rearward and carries another angled arm 80, the upper end of which is pivoted to the primary arm at 81, while its lower end bears a pressure roller 82, the axis of rotation of which is at right angles to the axes of the pressure rollers 53 of the front registering devices. hen the arm 79 is raised the arm 80 rests against a stop pin 83, and when it is lowered, a yielding pressure of the roller upon the sheet is produced through the agency of a spring 84 housed in a bore in the top of the arm 80 beneath a plunger 85, which is contacted by the end of an adjusting screw 86 threaded through an overhanging portion of the arm 79.
It will be understood that the side stop 61 is capable of being placed at any posltion transversely of the feeder front, and also of being reversed, so as to cooperate with either side edge of the paper. The pressure device 7 8 is also laterally shiftable on the shaft 38, and when the stop 61 is placed at the opposite side of the feeder, it may be removed from the shaft and replaced upon the remote portion adjacent the stop in its new position. iVhen this is done the bracket 87 may be removed from the arm 80 and applied to the opposite side thereof so that the presser foot blade will extend toward the stop. Obviously if desired one or more of the pressure devices 7 8 may be mounted upon the rock-shaft, thus obviating the necessity of removing and replacing one of them when the guide is changed from left to right and vice-versa, and also enabling the sheet to be driven laterally at a plurality of points, instead of at one point, if desired.
From Figs. 3, 4 and 5, it will be perceived that the angular relation of the arms 46 and 79 of the front and side registering means upon the rock-shaft is such that when the front registering devices are in their rearward receiving positions with the blades 50 converging upon the feeding surface, the arm 79 is raised at a substantial elevation,

As the front registering blades 50 have finished advancing the sheet against the front stops and have, with their pressure means, been lifted off the sheet. Fig. 5 shows the front registering devices thus lifted and the pressure roller S2 down upon the sheet directly over the slide 65. The cam 67 in its rotation now causes the slide 65 to move in the direction of the side stop, and by virtue of the cooperation of the pressure means moves the side edge of During this main off the sheet. For the succeeding period one of two dwell portions 92, 93 on the cam 67 holds the slide stationary. The movement of the front registering devices 20 and the pressure means 78 of the side registering means are determined by the cam 40. This cam has a concentric dwell portion 94 which turns in contact with the roll tl of the lever 41 during the time when the side registering slide is in operation under the control of the cam 67. \Vhen the slide stops a low drop 95 on the periphery of the cam 40 comes opposite the roll 41, permitting the rock-shaft 38 to turn backward slightly. This movement is suflicient to lift the pressure member 78 of the side registering means off the paper, but not sufiicient to bring the front registering devices down upon the same. A further dwell of the rock-shaft-operated parts now ensues, corresponding to the portion 96 of the cam 40, and during this brief interval the grippers of the gripper cylinder 17 seize the forward edge of the sheet and draw it off the feed surface and out of the field of action of the registering devices. Thereupon a rapid drop 97 upon the cam 40 passes beneath the roller 1-1, and in response thereto the front registering devices are quickly carried backward to the receiving position of Fig. 3 and the pressure member 78 of the side registering means is lifted still higher. At or about the same time the cam roll of the lever 68 moves to the other of the dwell portions of the cam 67, so that the slide 65 is moved in the direction away from the side stop, and then held stationary until the front registering devices have completed their operation upon the succeeding sheet. A front registering device for sheet feeders, comprising, in combination with a terminal paper support, a flexible blade having its face against the paper support, means to which the rear end of the blade is secured forreciprocating the same, a forwardly located pressure device bearing upon the blade, and means whereby the blade-reciprocating means lifts the pressure device at the forward part of its stroke.
23. A. front registering device for sheet feeders, comprising,-in combination with a terminal paper support, a rocker supported upon a transverse axisand extending into proximity to said paper support, a flexible blade secured at its rear end to said rocker and havingits face against the paper support,.and a pivoted pressure device resting upon the blade, said rocker and pressure device being so constructed and arranged that the former raises the latter toward the conclusion of its forward stroke.
24. In a sheet feeder, the combination with a terminal paper support, of a transverse rock-shaft, rockers fixed thereto and extending into proximity to the paper support, flexible blades secured at their rear ends to the rockers and extending forward with their faces against the support, and pressure arms loosely supported by the rockshaft and extending in front of the rockers so as to rest upon the blades and to be lifted by the rockers toward the conclusion of the forward stroke.
25. A front registering device for sheet feeders, comprising, in combination with a terminal paper support, a flexible blade extending longitudinally with its face thereon, a pivotally supported pressure device resting upon the blade, a rocker to which the rear end of the blade is connected, and means for swinging the rocker so as to advance the blade beneath the pressure device and then to raise the pressure device and blade off the paper.
26. A front registering device for sheet feeders, comprising, in combination with a terminal paper support, a downward extending arm mounted to rock on a transverse axis, a forward projecting blade-holder pivoted to said arm and having a tail ex tending upward behind the same, adjustable stops limiting the pivotal movement of the blade-holder on the arm, one of said stops cooperating with the tail, a flexible blade projecting forward from the blade-holder in face contact with the paper support, and pressure means bearing upon the blade.
27. In a sheet feeder, the combination of a side registering member beneath the forward portion of the path of the sheets, a transverse rock-shaft thereover, a front registering device operated by said rock-shaft, and a pressure device to cooperate with the side registering member also operated by the rock-shaft.
28. In a sheet feeder, the combination of a side registering member beneath the forward portion of the path of the sheets, a pressure device cooperative therewith, front registering devices, and mechanism for opcrating the front registering devices and raising them from the sheet, thereupon bringing such pressure device down upon the sheet over the side registering device, and then raising the pressure device while the front registering devices are still off the sheet.
29. In a sheet feeder, the combination of a side registering member beneath the forward portion of the path of the sheets, an operating rock-shaft thereover, front registering devices connected with the rock-shaft, and a pressure device also connected therewith for cooperation with the side registering member, said pressure device and front registering devices being connected in such relation that the pressure device descends while the front registering devices are operating forwardly and comes in contact with the sheet when the front registering devices have completed their forward movement and are raised by the rock-shaft.
30. In a sheet. feeder, the combination of a side registering member beneath the forward portion of the path of the sheets, an operating rock-shaft thereover, front registering devices connected with the rock-shaft, a pressure device also connected therewith for cooperation with the side registering member, said pressure device and front registering devices being connected in such relation that the pressure device descends while the front registering devices are oper ating forwardly and comes in contact with the sheet when the front registerlng devices have completed their forward movement and are raised by the rock-shaft, and means i for operating the rock-shaft providing for two dwells, one at the conclusion of the forward movement of the front registering devices while said pressure device is in contact with the sheet and the front registering devices are raised forwardly to free the sheet, and the other following a short return m0vement of the rock-shaft which lifts the pressure device without causing the front registering devices to bear upon the sheet.
