To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SOLOMON B. FEUER- STEIN, a citizen of the United States, resid ing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing- Presses, of which the following is a, specification.
This invention relates to printing presses and has for its general object the production of a small job-press of novel and improved construction.
While the machine herein disclosed is capable of use for various purposes, it is particularly designed for printing monograms and the like on letter-writing paper or other desired material.
It is one of the objects of the invention to produce an improved inking apparatus for printing presses of this character.
The invention contemplates the provision of a press for the purpose described which shall be of small and compact construction, convenient in operation, and cheap to manufacture.
The novel features and advantages of the invention will be fully set forth in the following detailed description.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a printing press embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken in the plane of line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 1 is a vertical section in the plane of line l 41 of Fig. 1. Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are sectional detail views on lines 5, 6 and 7, respectively, of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a sectional detail on line 8 of Fig. 3.
The preferred embodiment of my invention which I have herein shown comprises a framework consisting of a bed 10 and a frame or bracket 11 rising therefrom. In the upper portion of said frame is mounted a horizontal drive shaft 12 having a drive sheave 13 loosely mounted thereon. Said sheave may be continuously driven by a motor (not shown) belted thereto. The sheave has a clutch hub 14 having a lug 15 thereon arranged to engage a pin 16 fixed in a collar 17 which is rigidly secured on the shaft 12. A collar 18 is fixed on the shaft 12 at the outer side of the sheave 13. The sheave is arranged to be slid longitudinally of the shaft to bring the hub 14. and the collar 17 into clutch engagement by means of an angular lever 19, which extends downwardly through a slot in the frame 11 and is pivoted on a pin 20 seated in said frame. At the upper end of said lever is a fork 21 which engages in a groove 22 in the hub 1-1 of the drive sheave. The horizontal end of the lever 19 is attached to link 23 which extends downwardly and may be connected to a treadle. I have deemed it unnecessary to illustrate the treadle herein. A coiled spring 241, attached at one end to a screw 25 in the lever 19, and at its other end to 2. lug 26 projecting downwardly from the bed 10, tends to swing the lever 19 in a direction to slide the sheave 13 out of clutch with the collar 17, so that the sheave will rotate idly on the shaft 12. The bed 10 is arranged to rest upon a suitable table or support A with the lever 19 and the lug 26 projecting downwardly through a slot B in said support.
The printing platen comprises a metallic plate 28 having an impression plate 29 of suitable composition on its upper side against which the type in the printing head is pressed. The plate 29 may be secured to the plate 28 by interengagingedge portions indicated at 30 in Fig. 8. The plate 23 is seated in a recess 31 formed in the upper face of a raised portion 32 on the forward end of the bed 10. The plates 28 and 29 are held in proper position in the present in stance by a pin 33 fixed in the bed 10 and entering a recess in the plate 28. Said plates may be lifted out of the recess 31 and out of engagement with the pin 33.
The paper positioning means comprises a horizontal rod 35 which is adjustably mounted in a yieldable clip 36 secured to one side of the bed 10 by means of a bolt 37. A horizontal bar 38 is fixed crosswise on the forward end of the rod 35, and on said bar is slidably mounted a clip 39 having an angular lug or arm 40 at one end. The bar 38 and the lug 40 form a corner into which one corner of the paper may be moved in positioning the paper on the platen 28, 29.
The form-carrying element 12 is positioned above the platen 28 29 and is fixed on the lower end of a plunger 13 which is mounted for vertical reciprocation in bearings 44 in the frame 11. The detail construction of the element 42 is illustrated in Fig. 7 and comprises a portion 15 which is rigid with the plunger and a chase 16 which is detachable from the portion 45. The chase 16 has an undercut groove 47 in its upper face which is adapted to receive a bevel-faced bar 48 secured in the lower face of the portion 45. The chase 46 may be slid along the bar 48 to disengage said chase from the fixed portion 45. The form, not herein shown, is secured in a recess 49 in the lower end of the chase 46, being held in said recess by means of a clamping screw 50.
Between the bearings 44 the plunger 43 is provided with a cam 51 having a central opening, the larger portion of which is defined on the arc of a circle, and the lower side of which is substantially flat or horizontal. A plate 52 secured to the front side of the cam 51 closes the central opening therein. ()n the forward end of the shaft 12 is fixed an arm carrying at its end a roller 54, which arm and roller lie within the central opening in the cam, the arcuate portion of said opening being concentric with the shaft 12 when the cam is in its normal or uppermost position. In the lower portion of the opening in the cam is fixed a wedge member having an inclined upper face upon which is slidable a cotiperating wedge member 56, said members having a suitable interlocking rib connection 57. The member 56 may he slid by a screw 58 threaded in an opening in the cam 52 and having a head 59 at its inner end which engages in an opening in the member 56. Upon the outer end of the bolt 58 is fixed a head 60, and a lock nut 61 is threaded on said bolt and bears against the cam In the rotation of the shaft 12 the roller 54 is carried into engagement with the member 56 so that the plunger 54 will be periodically depressed. The normal height of the form-carrying element 42 and the limit of its downward moveinentmay be adjusted by sliding the wedge member 56 on the member as will be readily understood. In this manner the degree of pressure of the form against the paper may be varied at will. The plunger -43 and frame 11 may be pro ded with vertical guide faces 62 which slide in con tact with each other. The plunger 43 is normally held in its uppermost position by a coiled compression spring 63 which surrounds the upper end of said plunger and bears against the bearing 44 and a cap plate 64 secured to the upper end of the plunger. A suitable housing 65 incloses the upper end of the plunger and said spring and plate.
The inking means comprises a circular inking plate 68 having a rigid central stem 69 projecting downwardly therefrom and rotatably mounted in a sleeve 70. Said sleeve is adjustably mounted in the bed 10, preferably being externally screw threaded and turned into a threaded opening in the bed. A look nut 71 is threaded on the lower end of said sleeve and bears against the under face of the bed 10 to lock the sleeve to the latter. Openings 72 may be provided in said sleeve to receive a spanner wrench for turning the sleeve to adjust the height thereof. ln a bearing 73 in the frame 11 is rotatably mounted a vertical shaft 74 having a bevel gear '75 fixed on its upper end, which gear meshes with a bevel gear. 76 fixed on the drive shaft 12. On the lower end of the shaft 74 is fixed a head 7 7, and in'said head is secured a pair of horizontal shafts 78 on which are mounted inking rollers 79. A plate connects the outer ends of said shafts. In order that the head 77 may be adjustable to compensate for wear on the inking rollers 79 and to properly position said rollers with relation to the face of the form, said head is threaded on thelower end of the shaft 74. A lock nut 82 threaded on said shaft secures the. head 77 in its adjusted position.
In the operation of the machine, a sheet of paper is laid on the impression platen 29 and is properly positioned by moving it into engagement with the stop devices 38 i I and 40. The operator then depresses the treadle to swing the lever 19 and-thereby move the drive sheave 13 into clutch with the shaft 12. Said shaft will now be driven to rotate the shaft 74 and thus carry the inking rollers 79 first overthe face of the inking plate 68 and then along the'lower face of the form in the chase 46. The operator new releases the treadle to unclutch the driving sheave 13, and positions another sheet of paper on the platen. when he again depresses the treadle, and the cycle of movements abovedescribed is repeated.
When the inking rollers 7 9 become worn. or when adjustment isnecessary for any other reason, the lock nut 82 may be loosened and the head 77 given a complete revolution to raise the rollers so that they will properly contact the face of the form in the chase 46. The inking plate 68 may be vertically adjusted to correspond to the position of the rollers 79 by loosening the lock nut 71 and turning the sleeve 70 in its opening.
lVhileI have herein described one embodiment of my invention in considerable detail, I recognize the fact that modifications will occur to persons skilled in the art, and I therefore do not limit myself to the exact construction herein disclosed except as defined by the terms of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a printing press, the combination of a stationary horizontal platen, a vertically reciprocating type-carrying plunger above said platen, a rotary vertical shaft mounted immediately behind said plunger, a horizontally disposed inking roller rigidly mounted on the lower end. of-said shaft, a horizontal inking plate disposed immediately behind said shaft, and means for reciprocating said plunger and for rotating said vertical shaft continuously in the same direction to cause said inking roller to move in an endless path across the face of said inking plate and along the under face of the type in said type-carrying plunger.
2. In a printing press, the combination of a horizontal platen, a vertically reciprocat ing type-carrying plunger above said platen, a rotary vertical shaft immediately behind said plunger, a horizontally disposed inking roller secured to the lower end of said shaft, a horizontal inking plate rotatably mounted on a vertical axis rear- Wardly of said shaft, the axis of said plunger, said shaft and said inking plate being substantially alined in a. vertical plane extending from front to rear of machine, and means for reciprocating said plunger and for rotating said shaft continuously in the same direction to move said inking roller in an endless path across the face of said plate and along the face of the type carried by said plunger.
3. In a printing press, the combination of a type-carrying plunger, inksupplying means, and a horizontally disposed inking roller mounted for revolution continuously in the same directionabout a vertical axis positioned immediately between said type carrier and said ink-supplying means, said roller in its revolution being arranged to pass alternately in contact With said inksupplying means and along the face of the type in said type carrier.
4:. In a printing press, the combination of a stationarily mounted rotary inking plate, an inking roller, a type-carrier mounted for vertical reciprocation With relation to said inking-plate and said inking-roller, and means for causing said roller to travel in a circular path located in a horizontal plane and to pass over the face of said inking plate and along the face of the type in said type carrier.
In a printing press, the combination of a vertically reciprocable type carrier,a horizontal rotary inking plate, a horizontally disposed inking roller, and a rotary vertical shaft to which. said roller is fixed, rotation of said shaft carrying said roller over the face of said inking plate and along the face of the type in said carrier, the contact of the inking roller with the inking plate acting to rotate said plate step by step.

In a printing press, in combination, a bed having a stationary horizontal platen and having a frame rising from the rear end of the bed, a vertically reciprocating plun ger mounted in said frame above said platen, a rotary, vertical shaft mounted in the frame immediately behind said plunger, a horizontally disposed inking roller secured to the lower end of said shaft and lying in a plane beneath the face of the type carried by said plunger when the latter is in its elevated position, a horizontal inking plate rotatably mounted in said. bed on a vertical axis positioned immediately behind said shaft, said plate being disposed in a horizontal. plane beneath said inking roller, and means for reciprocating said plunger and for rotating said shaft continuously in one direction to move said inking roller over the upper face of said plate and along the under face of the type carried by said plunger.

In a printing press, the combination of an inking plate mounted for a rotary movement only about its axis, and an inking roller mounted to travel in a plane parallel to said plate and over the face of said plate, said. inking roller imparting an intermittent rotary movement to said plate solely by contact therewith.
8. In a printing press, the combination of an inking plate rotatably mounted on a fixed axis, and an inking roller mounted to travel in an endless path and to pass intermittently over the face of said plate. said roller moving in a fixed plane parallel to the face of the plate and acting to impart a step by step rotation to said plate by contact therewith.
9. In a printing press, the combination of a rotatable inking plate, and an inking device arranged to travel in a plane parallel to said plate and pass intermittently across the face ofsaid plate onto one edge and off the other edge thereof. said device acting to impart a partial rotation to said plate at each engagement therewith.
10. In a printing press, the combination of a rotatable inking plate. and an inking roller ar'anged to travel. in circular path over the face of said plate in a plane parallel vvith the plate and into and out of contact with said plate, said roller acting to impart a partial rotation to said plate at each. engagement therewith.
11. In a printing press. the combination of a rotatable inking plate. a rotary shaft mounted eccentric to said plate, and an inking roller fixed to said shaft and extending lateralh substantially at a right angle therefrom, said roller passing over the face of said inking plate during a portion of the circular travel of the roller. ind said rolle acting to impart a step by step rotation to said inking plate.
12. In a printing press, the combination of a vertically reciprocable type-carrying plunger, a rotary vertical shaft positioned alongside said plunger, a horizontal drive shaft at the upper end of the vertical shaft, said drive shaft rotating always in the same direction. an. operative connection liet'ween said two shafts for rotating said vertical shaft always in one direction, an operative connection between said horizontal drive shaft and said plunger for positively dcpressing the latter. a horizontally disposed inking roller secured to the lower end of said vertical shaft, and a horizontal inking device positioned rearwardly of said shaft, said inking roller being driven in an endless path along said inking device and along the face of the type in the bottom of the type plunger.

In a printing press. in combination, a vertically reciprocable type'carrying plunger, a vertical rotary shaft positioned rearwardly of said plunger, a horizontal driving shaft, intermeshing gears on said two shafts, a cam arm on said driving shaft lying ina cam opening in said plunger, a horizontal rotatable inking plate, and a horizontal inking roller fixed on the lower end of said vertical shaft and arranged to be carried in an endless path across the up per face of said inking plate and along the lower face of the type at the bottom of said type-carrying plunger. v

In a printing press, the combination of a bed, a vertically reciprocable type-carrying plunger mounted above said bed, a rotary vertical shaft positioned alongside said plunger, a head threaded on the lower end of said shaft, a locknut threaded on said shaft for locking said head thereto, a horizontal inking-roller carried by said head, a vertical bearing adj ustably mounted in said bed, and a horizontal rotary inking plate having a stem fitting in said bearing, whereby said roller and said plate may be vertically adjusted with relation to the type-carrier to compensate for the wear on said inking roller.
15. In a printing press, the combination of a type carrier, an inking plate, and an inking roller arranged to travel in an endless path and into alternate contact with said inking plate and said type carrier, means for adjusting the plane of movement of said inking roller with relation to said type carrier to compensate for wear on said roller, and means for correspondingly adjusting said inking plate with relation to said roller.

In a printing press, the combination of a vertically reciprocable type carrier, a horizontal rotary inking plate, a vertical rotary shaft, an inking roller carried by said shaft, said roller moving in a circular path alternately over the upper face of said inking plate and along the under face of the type in said carrier, means for vertically adjusting said roller with reference to said carrier, and means for correspondingly adjusting said inking plate with reference to said roller.
17; In-Ia printing press, the combination of a bed,'-a vertically reciprocable type carrier, a horizontal rotary inking plate mounted in said bed and vertically adjust able therein, a vertical rotary shaft alongside said carrier, a head adjust-ably mounted on the lower end of said shaft, and an inking roller disposed horizontally and mounted in said head, said roller traveling in a circular path alternately over the upper face of said inking plate and along the under face of the type in said carrier.
