The hinged lid 17 of a box and some (19, 20, 21) of its flaps are folded (and the flap 20 glued ) while the box is conveyed in the direction of its hinge line 16. The box is then advanced at right angles to the hinge line whilst the remaining flaps 22, 18 are folded (and the flap 18 glued), and whilst the bottom 38 of flap 19 is raised, glued and refolded. A continuous tear strip 23, 24, 25 which is not adhered to the box wall is formed around the lid flange. In the embodiment, the lid 17 is folded by a plough 29. After rotary members 30, 31 have folded flaps 19 and 21 respectively spots of glue are applied beneath the outer portion of flap 20 outside the tear strip zone by spokes 33. Double ended spokes 34 apply adhesive to the flap 20 on either side of the tear strip in the zone in which the flap overlies flap 21. After the flap 20 has been folded by a plough 36, the box is advanced at right angles to the hinge line either by transference of the box on to a conveyer at right angles to the first or through a 90-degree turn of the box caused through chain conveyers running at different speeds. Spots of adhesive are applied to the lower part 38 of the flap 19, to the lower part of flap 18, and also to the flap 18 above the tear strip in the region where the flap overlies flap 22. The flaps 18 and 19 are folded by ploughs 42 and 41. The glued portions may be held in compression for a time afterwards.
