Abstract

1481844 Paperboard containers having leakproof bottoms INTERNATIONAL PAPER CO 4 July 1974 [12 July 1973] 29649/74 Heading B8P A thermoplastics coated paperboard container blank having a lower portion of the type substantially as shown in Fig. 10 having side panels 16-19 and bottom closure panels 16a- 19a of which panels 16a and 18a are gusset forming panels, is provided in which the bottom forming flap 19a is a tuck in panel, at least the centre 81 of the transverse edge of which is positioned so that when the blank is erected the gusset points formed lie on the line of said transverse edge, and a narrow band of additional thermoplastics material is disposed on the interior side of at least the bottom forming flaps 17a and 19a to lie along the line of the transverse edge of the panel 19a and of the gusset points, and extending outwardly therefrom. when the container is erected, whereby channels formed in the base of the erected carton and through which liquid in the container might escape, are sealed. The thermoplastics material may be polyethylene, and may be provided as bands 93-96 as shown, or by a continuous band extending across the width of the blank, Fig. 6 not shown. The transverse edge 81 of the tuck-in flap 19a may be provided by forming a notch as shown, or the flap may terminate at the dotted lines 108, 109 so that the whole flap has the required length.
