[Also in Division G1] A variable inductor for use as a position indicating transducer in a high temperature atmosphere comprises a winding formed by a conductor, e.g. copper or an alloy of nickel and chromium, surrounded by a refractory insulating material, e.g. compacted magnesia, with a metallic outside sheathing of stainless steel. A movable core is associated with a member whose position is to be determined. The central conductor may be duplicated to form a primary and secondary winding, and two coils may be interconnected to form a differential transformer. The sheathing can be brazed to form a self-supporting unit.
