Abstract

1,098,989. EHD generators. A. M. MARKS. March 11, 1966 [March 11, 1965], No. 10825/66. Heading H2A. In an EHD generator employing a charged aerosol, the droplet-size is increased to that giving optimum mobility, by including a condensable vapour in the working gas, this vapour condensing on the droplets to increase their size, and they then pass through the working area. The droplets may be formed by the direct spraying of liquid from fine jets in the presence of an electric field which further disrupts each droplet, or by spraying a condensable vapour through a jet such that its expansion causes cooling and, therefore, condensation. As shown, superheated vapour 23 is sprayed from holes 22 in tubes 30 into the gas-stream 15. Droplets 44 are formed, and these pass through a region of charging electrodes 17 maintained at 3 kV. The charged droplets are collected at points or wires 34 at a higher potential. The droplets which emerge at 22, grow by condensation from the vapour from the same jet 22. If desired, (Fig. 4, not shown) an additional array of jets of liquid may be situated downstream of the tubes 30. A 'scavenger' additive may be employed.
