Abstract
709,498. Drying tobacco. PROCTOR & SCHWARTZ, Inc. April 15, 1952, No. 9372/52. Class 34(2) In a method of drying bundled tobacco, the bundles are supported straddle fashion and a drying medium is discharged angularly downward on to the shoulder portions of the bundles. As shown, an endless conveyer, on the cross-sticks 9 of which the bundles are suported, moves through a chamber 1 which is subdivided into a drying chamber D and heating chamber H. An endless conveyer 15 intermediate the upper and lower courses 6, 7 of the stick conveyer collects and removes particles of tobacco broken off from the bundles. Overlying the upper course 6 in the drying chamber D are air discharge housings 16 extending the width of the conveyer, the bottoms of the housings having nozzles 18, 19 to discharge drying air angularly downward against the head and shoulder portions of the bundles. The discharged air is reheated by passage over steam coils 20 in chamber H and returns to a duct 22 for recirculation by the fan 21. Typical conditions given include an air temperature of 250‹-300‹F at a nozzle velocity of 2000-4000 feet per minute.
