Abstract
1,261,921. Continuous casting; melt extruding. BATTELLE DEVELOPMENT CORP. 24 Feb., 1969 [4 Sept., 1968], No. 9759/69. Heading B3F. Molten metal, held in a chamber 12 of a furnace 10, is extruded through an orifice 14 into a cooling apparatus 18. Within the cooling apparatus the extrudate 16 comes into contact with an aerosol stream 24 such as a suspension of water droplets in air. The aerosol is produced by two atomizers 32, 34 co-operating so as to form a recirculating aerosol current around the pipes 24, 30, 26, 28. The droplets sprayed by the atomizer 32 are preferably finer than those sprayed by the atomizer 34. In the pipe 24 the aerosol stream travels in the same direction as the molten metal stream 16, but at the junctions of the pipes 28, 30 with the pipe 24 the extrudate is subjected to transverse aerosol currents to produce rapid cooling. The extrudate is collected in a vessel 20 where it is further cooled by a liquid 22.
