Abstract
<PICT:0591474/III/1> <PICT:0591474/III/2> <PICT:0591474/III/3> <PICT:0591474/III/4> An apparatus for spray coating articles in an electrostatic field comprises a protective structure for the operator and a movable support for the spray gun and one of the electrodes, to permit the manual shifting thereof to different positions relative to the articles, the electrostatic field being produced between the articles or their support and a discharge electrode. Articles 12 and 12a, Fig. 1, are conveyed along a track 10 with means provided for rotating the articles as they pass through the field. A protective cage for the operator consists of an adjustable frame 17 carried on bars 18 slidably supported within bars 16. Electrode wires 21 are carried on the forward ends of insulating bars 20 which project from a control bar 19. On bar 19 is also swivelly mounted a spray gun 25. So that no article may pass too close to the electrode, a photo-electric device 32 and 33 is provided, interception of which opens the circuit. A further safety measure is provided by a cord 34 which must be pulled down to close switch 35. Another switch 37 is mounted on the spray gun. In a modification, Fig. 3, the operator, spray gun 25 and the protecting cage structure are maintained at the same potential as the electrode 121 by having the electrode mounted directly on the gun. To prevent the operator being earthed while at high potential, a switch plate 122 on an insulated platform 123 is provided upon which he must stand to close the circuit. The supply tubing and coating material container are also insulated from earth. Modified forms of operating frames 217 and 317, Figs. 5 and 6, may be used in either form of the apparatus. The circuit may also be modified so that the electrode is earthed while the articles are at a high potential or so that each is at a high potential of different polarity. Should the articles be non-conducting they may be mounted on metal supports.
