Abstract

An article having a contoured surface is spray coated by electrostatic deposition of the coating material from a spray by means in which the article or its associated support comprises a collecting electrode and there is provided a spaced discharge electrode, said electrodes inducing an electrostatic field of high potential difference, and the discharge electrode being generally conformed in shape or arrangement to the contoured surface of the article. A cylindrical article 10, Fig. 1, is conveyed through a spraying zone, into which a coating is sprayed from guns 11, by means of hangers 12 drawn by chains 13 along track 14. Partially surrounding the line of travel of the articles is a discharge electrode 15 mounted on insulating legs 16 and between the supports 15 are longitudinally extending wires 17 connected to one terminal of a high voltage source 18. The other terminal is earthed and so is the track and the article. Thus an electrostatic field is produced by the electrode wires 17 and the articles. The coating material is sprayed into this field and the particles are electrically attracted on to the article. In the modification of Fig. 2 there are shown spray nozzles 111, discharge electrode 117, belt type conveyer 113 <PICT:0594564/III/1> <PICT:0594564/III/2> <PICT:0594564/III/3> <PICT:0594564/III/4> and carved articles 110. In Fig. 3 is shown the article 210, conveyer belt 213 and discharge electrode 217. Fig. 4 shows a modification in which a hollow article of poor conducting material is to be externally coated. A conducting support 412 is inserted in the hollow article 410 and the combination of the two acts as the collecting electrode.
