Abstract

<PICT:0605338/III/1> <PICT:0605338/III/2> <PICT:0605338/III/3> <PICT:0605338/III/4> <PICT:0605338/III/5> A method of coating an article consists in associating the article with a substantially inert source of liquid-coating material in an electrostatic field, wherein said article and material are of high potential difference relative to each other to thereby cause said material to be attracted in finely-divided particles to said article for deposition thereon. Figs. 1 and 2 show an article 10 to be coated, mounted on a support 11 grounded at 12. The applicator head 13, preferably coextensive with the surface to be coated is V-shape in crosssection and is provided along its reduced discharge <PICT:0605338/III/6> <PICT:0605338/III/7> <PICT:0605338/III/8> edge with a series of orifices 15 through which the coating material 16 may be oozed-out as droplets 17. The head may be connected to a source of coating material by a flexible tube and there may be more than one compartment in the head. The applicator head is kept at a high potential by connecting it to a source of high voltage 20 through one terminal thereof, the other being grounded at 21, and the article 10 is grounded. Hence an electrical force acts on the droplets 17, which are attracted on to the article. The head may be grounded and the article charged at a high potential. Figs. 3 and 4 illustrate an applicator head 13 supported by handle 114 with a hose 119 leading from a source of coating material and connected to a valve operated conduit 120 controlled by valve 121. The droplets 17 may be controlled by a needle adjustment 122 controlling the droplet orifice. In Figs. 5 and 6 the orifices are provided by a plate 214 clamped between opposed rows of cylindrical needles 215. In Figs. 7 and 8 the pipe 319 is surrounded by a shield 314 extending downwardly and providing a frame for a wire wrapping 315 on to which fall drops from a series of orifices in pipe 319.
