Abstract

<PICT:0710852/III/1> <PICT:0710852/III/2> <PICT:0710852/III/3> <PICT:0710852/III/4> <PICT:0710852/III/5> <PICT:0710852/III/6> <PICT:0710852/III/7> <PICT:0710852/III/8> <PICT:0710852/III/9> Articles are electrostatically coated by atomizing under the influence of electrostatic forces from points distributed along an extended edge of a film of the coating material, such film at least adjacent said extended edge being of substantially uniform thickness. Referring to the drawings, when compressed air is supplied to tube 25, Fig. 2, piston 22 is raised against spring 23 to open needle 19 and hence allow coating composition from pipe 20 to flow along passages 16 and 11 to annular discharge edge 12 which is charged to a high electrical potential and so atomizes the liquid material and which is surrounded by wall 30. Adjustment of control member 26 alters position of ball 16 and so regulates the amount of coating composition supplied to the edge. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which the edge is surrounded by two wall portions 132A and 132B which are moved upwards as control member 126A is tightened, hence closing gap between 132A and wall 110 but leaving that between wall and 132B so that a semi-circle of coating composition is supplied to the edge. Fig. 5 shows a modification in which the edge 235 of the control member 226B serves the discharge edge while in Fig. 6 the coating liquid is run into chamber 316 with side walls 324 and 325 forming opening 328 to discharge edge 326 or (Fig. 7) grooves 329 may be cut in the wall portion 324. Fig. 9 shows the apparatus for spraying metal canisters moving along a conveyer and Fig. 14 for spraying flat extended plates 811 moving along overhead conveyer 812, the atomizing head being rotated if desired by air motor 826. In Fig. 11, canisters 713 are internally coated as they move along conveyer 710, the spraying apparatus being moved along with the canister (which may be rotated by means not shown) until cam 715 and lug 734 co-operate to release rod 730 from article support 711, at the same time spraying apparatus 738 is lifted from canister as wheel 744 runs up cam 748 and is lowered into the canister by action of springs 735. Specifications 605,338, 710,919 and 710,920 are referred to.
