Abstract
966,291. Electrostatic spray-coating. RANSBURG ELECTRO-COATING CORPORATION. Aug. 5, 1960 [May 5, 1959], No. 15355/59. Heading B2B. An apparatus for electrostatically coating articles comprises a conveyer 10 for moving the articles 11 in a path past mechanical atomizing means 14, means (e.g. a high-voltage source 30) for charging the spray particles and establishing a high voltage electrostatic field between the atomizing means 14 and the articles 11, and means for moving the atomizing means so as repeatedly to change the general direction of projection of the spray so that the spray zone is moved in a direction that extends along the article path, thereby to change the volume of atmosphere into which the spray is projected, at a rate and extent such as to increase the efficiency of deposition of the coating material. As shown, the spray nozzle 15, to which coating material is supplied from a supply 26 under pressure sufficient to cause atomization, is rotated continuously by a motor 18. In another embodiment, a compressed air spray gun is used, and is oscillated by a reciprocable piston operating a rack which engages a gear affixed about the column on which the spray gun is mounted. Means are provided for triggering the gun at the ends of its traverse.
