Abstract

1,125,446. Spray-producers; coating apparatus. ASHDEE CORP. 10 Sept., 1965 [16 Sept., 1964], No. 38781/65. Headings B2F and B2L. Apparatus suitable for coating articles such as hollow tubes with powder comprises a body member 11 formed of a non-conductive material such as ebonite and provided with a passage 12, a conduit 16 arranged to supply fluidized powder to the passage 12, a steel charging tube 15 communicating with the passage 12 and forming part of the passageway for the powder, and a substantially coneshaped member 25 which may be of metal, disposed axially with respect to the tube 15 at the outlet end thereof. A high voltage is supplied to the tube 15 from a line 30 via a spring 34, a resistor 35 and a set screw 38. The member 25 is mounted within a shroud 20 by a bracket 26 secured in position by a member 28 and a nut 29. The dispersal of the powder and the separation of 'the powder and carrier gas may be controlled by varying the position of the member 25 with respect to the shroud. In the embodiment of fig. 2 (not shown) the line 30 is connected to the tube 15 by a screw (42) and in a further embodiment, fig. 7 (not shown) the cone shaped member in the absence of a shroud forms a fixed distributor. Fig. 6 (not shown) depicts an apparatus for coating articles (58), which are supported by an earthed conveyor, with powder. Powder from a hopper (51) is fluidized by compressed air fed by a pipe (62) and supplied to an automatically operated gun (40) in a booth 55. Surplus coating powder is recirculated into the hopper (51). The articles (58) may be heated and/or pre-treated and mixtures of powders may be sprayed.
