Abstract

<PICT:0830514/III/1> An apparatus for electrostatically spray coating an article comprises an atomizer 14, a conveyer for the article spaced from the atomizer, means for feeding liquid, e.g. paint, to the atomizer at a controlled rate for atomization therefrom as a fine spray in a pattern having a central portion devoid of spray particles, a high voltage source 26 for charging the particles and maintaining the article at a spray-attracting potential, and an axial shaft on the atomizer carrying an electrode 24 for forming two zones of spray-repelling potential, the zones being spaced on opposite sides of the spray axis ahead of the atomizer and in a single axial plane of the spray. Paint is delivered at a controlled rate to a tube 21, 22 having a cut-away part 22a to allow paint to flow to the interior surface of a rotating bell-shaped member 17 having an edge 17a which acts to atomize the paint and project it outwardly and forwardly in an expanding circular spray. The electrode 24 secured to the tube 22 and connected to the same high voltage terminal as the atomizer 17 serves to modify the spray pattern produced on the article both in plan view, e.g. by splitting it into two arcuate lobes, and in cross-section. The electrode 24 may be angularly off-set from the vertical plane containing the axis 17x of the atomizer, e.g. to compensate for the tilting of the lobes due to the rotation of the atomizer. Atomizers may be disposed side-by-side in pairs at each side of a conveyer for the articles and a downwardly-directed atomizer above the conveyer may be vertically reciprocated between adjacent articles. All the atomizers may be controlled by suitable "triggering" circuits. A potential of 100,000 volts, speed of atomizer rotation of 900 r.p.m., and a rate of paint discharge of 200 c.c. per minute are mentioned. Specification 710,920 is referred to.
