Abstract
1,054,921. Coating-apparatus. HENRY W. PEABODY (INDUSTRIAL) Ltd. July 3, 1963 [April 3, 1962], No. 12704/62. Heading B2L. An electrostatic spray-coating apparatus comprises a conveyer for conveying through a coating zone a succession of larger and irregularly shaped articles to be coated (e.g. motor car bodies), one or more atomizing devices for spraying liquid coating material on to an article as it passes through the coating zone, and means for charging spray particles electrically to promote their deposition on the article, wherein at least one of the atomizing devices is mounted on a support whereby the attitude of the atomizing device with respect to the article can be angularly changed, and means are provided changing said attitude as the article being sprayed moves with respect to the atomizing device. The atomizing devices may be rotary discs or bells and may additionally be movable transversely to the path of movement of the article. In a preferred embodiment car bodies in transit on a conveyer, which may be of different shapes and sizes, are detected by a photo-electric device and the spraying mechanism activated accordingly, as described there is one spray head on each side of the body movable towards and away from the body, one further head on each side of the centre line above the body also movable towards and away from the body and a fifth head vertically above the centre line which is tiltable towards the front and rear of the body and may be tilted automatically to follow the contour of the body.
