Abstract

990,149. Spray-producers; coating apparatus. DE VILBISS CO. Nov. 28, 1963 [Dec. 13, 1962], No. 46995/63. Headings B2B and B2F. An apparatus 10 suitable for spraying coating material such as paint on to an article 12 comprises a spray head 48 designed to spray the paint generally radially from an edge 68, said head being maintained at a first potential by a voltage source 84, a field ring 70, Fig. 2, located concentrically with respect to the head 48 and maintained at a lower potential by a source 86, Fig. 1, so that the paint moves towards the ring 70 from the edge 68 in generally radial streams, and an annular air nozzle 80 for directing a stream of air past said head 48 transversely to the said streams so as to cause at least portions of the streams to break into small particles and to assist in transporting the particles towards the article 12. The article is is maintained at earth potential and the atomized particles are carried on to the article by a combination of the air stream and the field between the apparatus 10 and the article 12. The head 48 comprises a body portion 50 and a cap 52 which is resiliently urged rearwardly against the annular flange 66 of the body portion 50 by a spring 62, the pressure of which may be adjusted. When the pressure of paint in the chamber 56 becomes sufficiently high it overcomes the force of the spring 62 and pushes the cap 52 outwardly slightly so that the paint flows to the edge 68. If desired the cap may be held in fixed spaced relation with respect to the body 50. The trigger 30 simultaneously operates valves 32 and 34 for controlling the flow of air and paint from the tanks 16 and 14 respectively. The air stream from the nozzle 80 may be slightly convergent to modify the conventional doughnut-shaped spray pattern and other patterns may be produced by modifying the shapes of the members 48, 70 and 80.
