Abstract

In a method of electrostatic spray-painting, the workpiece is connected to one side of a source of high voltage and a plate-like spray head to the other, paint being supplied to the upper surface of the spray head so that it flows by gravity to an edge thereof at which it is atomized and charged so as to be deposited on the workpiece. As shown in Fig. 1, the spray <PICT:0793596/III/1> <PICT:0793596/III/2> head comprises a metal plate 20, bent as shown and supported on an insulator 28. Paint is slowly fed through a tube 30 from a pressurized or elevated supply tank 34 to the sloping surface 32 of the plate 20, whence it flows down to the end 24 which is preferably rounded at the top edge, and provided with a knife edge below, at which the paint is atomized; a groove may be provided adjacent to the spraying edge. The spray head is connected to the negative pole of a high voltage D.C. source, the positive pole of which is earthed. The workpiece 36 is carried through the field of spray on an earthed conveyer, and its movement may be used for operating switches 52, 54 controlling the current to the head 20; relays may be used to hold the circuits open or closed for predetermined times after the operation of the switches, and control valves may be fitted to the paint conduit. As shown in Fig. 4 the spray head may also consist of a flat tapered plate 20 of non-metallic material such as a synthetic resin, e.g. polystyrene, or hard rubber or the like, mounted on a metal stud 40 which is pivoted to a metal stand 48, connected to the negative terminal of the power supply. The paint is delivered by a tube 30, preferably non-metallic. Paints which react with the surface to be coated, or two or more materials which react with each other during the spraying operation, may be sprayed. The article to be coated may be pre-heated, e.g. when it is non-conductive, such as a steel steering wheel having a rubber-like covering, and shields, which may or may not be connected in circuit, may be used to direct the spray.
