Abstract
Torsion bars for deformable mechanical connections such as suspension springs are produced from rolled, extruded or drawn steel bars from which the decarburized layer has been re-moved by machining or abrasion by subjecting steel bars after machining to final diameter to a surface heat treatment comprising surface heating to above the transformation temperature of the steel, e.g. 875 DEG C., and then quenching, the duration of the heating being such that the interior of the bars is an annealed structure or the structure obtained during the production of the steel bars. The surface hardening is preferably carried out by continuously passing the bars through an induction heater followed by an oil or a water sprinkler. Flame or torch heating may alternatively be used. The process is especially suitable for bars of unalloyed carbon steel containing 0.35 to 0.50% C. and impurity limits of 0.04% P, 0.035% S and 0.065% S+P. After machining to final diameter, the anchoring head at the ends of the bars may be roughened out by hot forging and given final form by machining or cold forming. After surface hardening, the bars may be tortionally deformed.
