Abstract

Direct softening heat treatment of wire rod is carried out immediately after hot rolling. The rod is coiled in an annealing furance, and held at temperature or gradually cooled, e.g. at 2 deg.C per second or less. Coiling is preferably by a laying or pouring type coiler. It may be done in the furnace proper, or in a closed chamber attached to the furnace, or partitioned off inside it. The furnace may be a batch type unit, e.g. a pot furnace, or a continuous furnace, possibly divided by opening doors into zones, with individually controlled temperature and atmos..
