Abstract

1,095,696. Forage harvesters. RUSTON'S ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Nov. 1, 1966 [Nov. 2, 1965], No. 46428/65. Heading A4C. In a cutting device forming part of a forage harvester, a moving blade cooperates with a ledger plate which is mounted for movement in response to a force greater than those applied thereto in normal cutting, e.g. a force applied by a solid object in the machine. In Figs. 1 and 2 radial knives 3 and ejector scoops 5 are mounted on a circular plate 1, but reference is also made to the use of cylindrical cutters. In Fig. 1, ledger plate 6 is bolted to a frame 7 which is attached to two main supports 11, 12 of the machine framework by shear bolts 13, while in Fig. 2, plate 6 is mounted on a frame 15 having a pair of inwardly inclined side members 16, 17 cooperating with a pair of wedges 18, 19 inwardly urged by springs 24, 25 to force the frame upwards against stops 26, 27, but allowing it to move downwards if excessive force is applied to ledger plate 6.
