Abstract

Silicon-iron sheet is pickled subsequent to any hot-rolling step, and is then decarburized in a wet atmosphere at 1200 DEG -1500 DEG F., followed without any intervening surface treatment by annealing in a dry non-decarburizing atmosphere at 1400 DEG -1900 DEG F., at least one of the heat-treatment steps being carried out with the sheet in the form of an open coil. Decarburizing may be carried out for 1 to 8 hours in a hydrogen-bearing atmosphere having a dew-point of 90 DEG \sB 20 DEG F., and annealing in a hydrogen-bearing atmosphere of dew-point not higher than 50 DEG F. for 1/2 to 3 hours. When the same furnace is used for both treatments the dry atmosphere should be introduced before the temperature is raised for the anneal. The sheet may finally undergo a flattening anneal at 1300 DEG -1500 DEG F.
