Abstract

1,094,385. Pile driving. ESSO PRODUCTION RESEARCH CO. Oct. 8, 1965 [Dec. 21, 1964 (2)], No. 42835/65. Headings E1F and E1H. A pile driving head 18, Fig. 4a, which is connected to a section of hollow piling 14b, has sealing elements of packer assembly 34 to the underside of which water can be supplied through conduit 35 to effect a good seal between the driving head 18J, the piling section 14b. When piling section 14b fills with water below assembly 34, floating plate 42, Fig. 5 is forced upwards to compact seal rings 40, 41 against fixed plate 38, the inner wall of the pile section and the outer wall of conduit 35. In another embodiment the sealing means is inflatable. In the instances where piling section, 14b has previously been welded to piling section 14a on the latter reaching refusal in sands 15, Fig. 4, the jetting action of jet line assembly 21 in the lower pile section 14a is increased by the large hydrostatic pressure exerted.
