Abstract
1426082 Pile driving M UCHIDA 13 March 1973 [15 March 1972 (2) 21 March 1972] 11946/73 Heading E1H Piles are driven by means of the potential energy only of a large mass which is made to bear on the upper end of a pile section; the mass may comprise an assembly of concrete blocks, or a container of water, earth or sand, and is raised by means of air pumped into an upturned vessel floating in a tank of water, Fig. 1, (not shown). After each stroke of the mass a further pile section may be placed on the one already driven. In an offshore location, the assembly may comprise ballast tanks 21 and buoyancy tanks 22 located below the sea surface and open at their lower ends, the assembly being raised or lowered by introducing or venting compressed air to or from the buoyancy tanks Fig. 2.
